Speaking from the heart the 51-year-old actor said: 'To this day everything I do is still connected to that.

'We haven't done the deal yet. I'm a very persistent person, you never know.

'I didn't get married to get divorced.'

The estranged couple, separated in 2012 after nine years of marriage, and the Oscar winner added he hopes to convince her to rekindle their relationship in the future.

Russell also revealed he doesn't like not wearing his wedding ring and feels unbalanced.

Speaking to Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning he said: 'I was so proud to wear that ring, Charlie. I don't feel balanced..'

Russell, who has been hitting the American chat show circuit to promote his film The Water Diviner, recently admitted he and Danielle were still 'discussing' the status of their relationship.

He revealed to news.com.au last week: 'Technically we’re married. We are separated and discussing what that means.'

The Australian star indicated his career which involves a lot of overseas travel, may have been partially to blame for the breakdown of the couples marriage.

He said: 'Danielle is a great mum. We both made the decision that the family should stop travelling together.

"The platform we have set for the boys is one of consistency.'

Revealing they decided to put their children first he added:  'It was clear when we were travelling together that it wasn't the healthiest thing for the kids.

'They had to change schools, make new friends all the time, and there was something in that style of life where the grounded shifted under them all the time. That wasn't good for them.'

In an earlier interview the actor also said that buying the beleaguered South Sydney Rabbitohs could also have cost him his relationship.

The Gladiator star told CBS purchasing his beloved football club in 2006 and turning the players into rugby league champions earlier this year, 'probably cost me my marriage.'

'It was a lot of work, man, and I already had a busy schedule....'

But whether the 45-year-old singer, who has had an on-again off-again relationship with the actor since 1989, feels the same is questionable since she recently referred to them as 'friends.'

Referring to Danielle as 'my wife', Russell told CBS: 'Making a film is my job and my wife understands what my job is, but to her the situation was needlessly taking myself away.'

The Noah star has refused to rule out a reconciliation in the future, having previously told how he has loved the diminutive blonde since the moment they met.

The New Zealand-born star recently told The Sunday Times newspaper: 'I've loved Danielle Spencer since 1989 - that's never going to change - and that's one of those things where I stare at her and go, "How did this fail?"

However, Russell is quick to admit the Rabbitohs is more a labour of love, often referring to them as a 'community movement' and not just an Australian football team.

Indeed so passionate is the Hollywood star's for the sport of rugby league that in February he passed on presenting at the Oscars to watch the club compete in the World Club Challenge match in the UK.

The Rugby League fanatic told the BBC: '...When they told me the date I was just like ‘Sorry, I’ve got a previous engagement!’ he laughed.

As well as being the current co-owner of the long running sports team, Russell was present in Sydney last year to witness the Rabbitohs first premiership win since 1971.

'It was a magnificent movement', he reminisced.

In recent days, the Oscar winning actor has also been linked to buying English football club, Leeds United, who he also supports.
