He's so caring! Ben Affleck puts his hand protectively on wife Jennifer Garner's back as they take a stroll in Los Angeles

The couple seemed to be deep in conversation.

But that didn't stop Ben Affleck, 42, from instinctively putting his hand on 43-year-old wife Jennifer Garner's back as he made sure they both crossed the road safely on Friday.

The pair strolled near their home in the Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles without their children Violet, age eight, Seraphina, aged six, and son Samuel, aged three, who were likely at school.

And they took the opportunity to have a serious discussion about something.

Both looked casual for the outing with the muscular hunk in a black leather jacket over a black T-shirt, baggy brown trousers and black sneakers.

Jennifer opted for a black-and-white striped blouse tucked into black skinny jeans and black flats.

She clipped her long, dark red tresses back off her make-up free face as she looked up at her 6ft 4ins beau.

Happily married for 10 years, they no doubt know that the secret for a successful relationship is communication. And they certainly appeared to be doing that.

They may have been talking about the consternation that followed this week's Wikileaks revelation that the Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice star reportedly concealed his slave-owning ancestor on the October 14 episode of PBS's Finding Your Roots.

WikiLeaks published hacked emails from last July in which Sony chief executive Michael Lynton instructed host Henry Louis Gates Jr. to 'take it out if no one knows' after Ben contacted him.

Root ing out the problem?: Ben, 42, and Jennifer, 43, may have been discussing the Wikileaks revelation that he reportedly asked for his slave-owning ancestor to be omitted from PBS's Finding Your Roots in October

Two-time Emmy winner Gates agreed to the omission. The program has previously traced the lineage of other celebrities including Barbara Walters, John Legend, Robert Downey Jr. and Jessica Alba.

Ben has since apologised, saying on Facebook on Tuesday: 'I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth. I regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story.

Rethinking his past: Ben took to Facebook on Tuesday to say, 'I regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story....It is an examination well worth continuing'

'We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery.

'It is an examination well worth continuing. I am glad that my story, however indirectly, will contribute to that discussion.'
