The 49-year-old had played the doctor for all 11 seasons of the show, and curiously had recently signed a contract that would take him through to the end of season 12.

On Thursday the show's creator Shonda Rhimes issued a statement praising Dempsey for his portrayal of the hugely popular medic.

'Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character - for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our "McDreamy",' she said.

'Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example - happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true - of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.

'Now, Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: "the carousel never stops turning".'

Network ABC also issued a statement on the momentous development.

'After 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we've been proud to be the home of "McDreamy" and the "Mer/Der" love story,' it said.

'The devotion of Grey's fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey's talent. "McDreamy" will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.'

In the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly, Dempsey spoke about his sudden end.

'Things happened very quickly, where we were like, "Oh this is where it's going to go." It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don't remember the date. It was not in the fall. Maybe February or March. It happened very quickly,' he said.

Even though he was signed for another full season after the current one, the actor claimed he was not surprised by his death.

'No, not really. It was just a natural progression with the way the story was unfolding. It was like, "Okay! This was obviously the right time".'

He said his final day on set was 'like any other day… just another work day. There was still too much going on. You're in the midst of it, not really processing it.'

According to EW, Dempsey began to tear up in the interview when he spoke about Ellen Pompeo, who plays his on-screen wife Meredith Grey.

'It was magic. It's beautiful. We're like a married couple,' he said. 'It's 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning. Chemistry right away.'

News that the actor was being killed off began to leak shortly before Thursday's episode aired, when a fan of the show got hold of an early copy of Entertainment Weekly and posted a picture online.

Although EW doesn't normally hit the shelves until Friday morning - the morning after episodes of Grey's Anatomy normally air - subscribers of the mag can sometimes get early copies on Thursday... and this week's had a major spoiler.

The intro to the article read: 'Dark and twisty doesn't even begin to describe last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, but nobody was more surprised at the dramatic exit of Dr. Derek Shepherd than Patrick Dempsey himself. The actor spoke exclusively to EW about checking out of Grey's — for good.'

'Last week's episode' therefore referred to one that hadn't happened yet, and speculation is grew that Dr Shepherd would be killed off in Thursday's episode 'How To Save A Life'.

In the show, Dempsey's character has been missing; at the end of the previous episode his wife Meredith is about to phone him when she see's a police car approaching her home.

The trailer for Thursday's episode had revealed where he had been; witnessing the car accident and attempting to helping the victims.

According to JustJared.com, Dempsey recently filmed his death scene in a park Los Angeles park, and none of the other main cast members were present.

Page Six reported that the actor is being killed off after a run in with the show's creator Shonda Rhimes.

Previously in the show Dempsey's character was 'given a job in Washington DC' which apparently was also caused by a clash with no-nonsense Rhimes, who infamously dumped main stars Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington out of the show too.

'Patrick has been acting like a diva and has clashed with Shonda. She suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn't coming back full time,' the website quoted a source.

The expendables: Other main cast who've clashed with Rhimes include Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, both of whom had to find new jobs shortly afterward

'Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, there is little tolerance on the show for troublesome talent.'

Dempsey is currently also going through a divorce from his wife of 16 years Jillian Filk, with whom he has three children.

Meanwhile the fan who originally Instagrammed the EW article reacted furiously to the spoiler, even tagging Rhimes

'@entertainmentweekly how are you going to put that little, tiny, microscopic spoiler alert warning next to a full page picture of the smokin' hot @patrickdempsey and expect people to notice it!?! You literally just RUINED one of the most important moments of @greysabc in the history of the show!!' she wrote.

'I'm so FURIOUS right now that if I was also fast I'd be filming with Vin Diesel for the 8th installment. I'm seriously considering canceling my subscription. Is that an overreaction? @shondarhimes Am I right?'
