First official look at Jared Leto as a cap-toothed, tattooed Joker on the Toronto set of Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted the first official image of Jared Leto as a cap-toothed, tattooed Joker on Friday.

In it, the 43-year-old Oscar winner flashes his silver-capped teeth and full-body Joker ink, including the word 'damaged' across his forehead.

The Dallas Buyers Club star ended up resembling an emerald-green-haired version of Houston rapper Riff Raff (born Horst Simco).

Leto - famed for his commitment to roles - shaved off his eyebrows, beard, and chopped off his luscious mane of ombré tresses.

'The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character - that's what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right? [He's] this beautiful disaster of a character - what a big challenge,' the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman told Billboard in February.

'I'm trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours - and I'm terrible at eating a lot.'

On April 9, Ayer tweeted a snap of Jared posing like Joker on the 1988 cover of DC Comics' Batman: The Killing Joke - perhaps a hint at the plotline.

The Joker is well-charted territory - Leto is the fourth man to portray the clown prince of crime on the big screen.

In 2008, Heath Ledger scored a posthumous Oscar for his menacing rendition of a scarred, lipstick-smeared Joker in The Dark Knight.

And three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson spent two hours each day in the make-up chair to craft the ominous grin of his colourful, wisecracking Jack Napier.

On Tuesday, the 77-year-old icon told TMZ outside Mr. Chow that he thought Jared would be 'fine' as the giggly, psychotic supervillain.

His most memorable villain/victim was undoubtedly the snobby investment banker Paul Allen in the 2000 cult classic American Psycho.
