SPOILER ALERT! Laura Carmichael films scenes for the wedding of Carson and Mrs Hughes in the final season of Downton Abbey

She's been unlucky in love herself but that doesn't seem to be stopping Edith Crawley, played by Laura Carmichael, from supporting the nuptials of Downton Abbey stalwarts Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes.

Members of the cast were spotted filming scenes for the next Julian Fellowes wedding in Burghclere, Hampshire.

Joining Laura was Mr Carson himself, played by Jim Carter, while Phyllis Logan was unseen - likely in the church keeping her wedding dress concealed.

The couple became engaged when Mr Carson popped the question on the Christmas special.

In the final few scenes of the festive show he asked the head housekeeper to be his wife after buying a cottage for them both to live in.

'Take your time to decide,' he tells her, 'but know that I'm not marrying anyone else.'

Carson asked if she is offended by the proposal, but Mrs Hughes simply responded, 'Oh Mr Carson I can assure the very last thing in the world that I am in this moment is offended,' she tells him.

They pour a drink and make a toast to celebrate 'the fact that I can still get a proposal at my age,' Mrs Hughes says.

'I thought you'd never ask!'

The wedding is a celebration by upstairs and downstairs of the North England estate with Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) in a wide brimmed hat in attendance.

Also on the guest list is fellow servant Daisy, played by Sophie McShera, who is seen outside of her kitchen smock, in a pretty pleated orange dress for the occasion.

There were a whole host of cast members playing characters from both sets of classes and there also appeared to be a few new faces.

After the Christmas special aired, producer Gareth Neame spoke to Variety about the audience's excitement for the wedding.

He said, 'One of the things with running a show like this that’s so popular globally you start to get a sense of what the fans respond to and relate to, and which pairings have really caught people’s imagination.

'There’s just something about this couple who have been almost like a married couple all the way through, they just don’t know it yet.

'They’ve both gotten to later years without having tied the knot. It’s the lovely thing where millions all over the world can see what the characters can’t see for themselves.'

Meanwhile Lady Edith is spotted with relative newcomer Bertie Pelham, played by Harry Hadden-Paton.

Since the loss of the father of her illegitimate child, Gregson, Edith has been heartbroken and back in a romantic wasteland.

But the arrival of the wealthy landowner at the end of season five hinted that she may finally be due some good fortune.

While the snaps of them filming show them only talking in the street, it may be the next love story for the Crawley sister.

Although by some accounts, she will not be alone as long sought after Mary may find herself wooed yet again.

Hugh Bonneville told Digital Spy, 'Some faces that we met towards the end of the fifth season may or may not be coming over the horizon to break or make the hearts of Lady Mary and Lady Edith and people like that.'

Specifically Michelle Dockery's character may meet Henry Talbot (played by Matthew Goode) again, with the producers and creators reportedly trying to tie the actor down for some time.
