He won Wimbledon at 22 and became a father the following year.

Now, at the age of 44, Pat Cash has become a grandfather.

The tennis star's daughter Mia, 22, gave birth to a girl in Norway at the weekend.

Cash, who famously climbed into the players' box to hug his girlfriend and coach after winning Wimbledon in 1987, admitted he was surprised at becoming a granddad at such a young age.

The Australian, who has become a popular tennis commentator on the BBC, said: 'It was a bit quicker than I expected, I've got to be honest.

Then again, my kids came a bit sooner than I expected too. So, yeah, I was a young dad and now I'm a young grandad.'

Cash who turns 45 next week, plans to visit his granddaughter before his birthday. He said: 'As soon as I leave Australia, I'll be on the plane up to Oslo to see the new addition to the Cash family.'

Cash has four children; two from his relationship with Norwegian model Anne-Britt Kristiansen, and 16-year-old twins from his marriage to Emily.

In his 2002 autobiography he revealed that his children were all that stopped him committing suicide during the drug-filled depression that blighted much of his career.
