German police to quiz Pete Doherty over claim he took part in 'drunken' raid on record store

British rocker Pete Doherty is to be interviewed by police in Germany amid allegations that he was seen drunk breaking and entering a record store.

Police in Regensburg have told Doherty to present himself for an interview today.

His hotel room in the city was searched following the incident in which a witness allegedly identified the Babyshambles frontman as one of three raiders of the shop. Nothing incriminating was found in his room.

Police said they have invited Doherty to a 'secret location' to discuss his whereabouts at the time of the crime and who he was with.

A guitar and CDs were stolen in the break-in at the store in the old town section of Regensburg where Doherty is filming scenes for a French movie.

His name was allegedly given to police by the witness who confirmed they are investigating but refused to say if he was a suspect.

Police spokesman Michael Rebele confirmed however that someone with a 'prominent name' is being investigated in connection with the break-in.

Several German newspapers and websites carried reports about it.

According to media reports the witness claimed to have observed three 'obviously drunk English- speaking men' smashing the window of the shop early yesterday morning.

'Was it Doherty or a doppelganger?' asked the Mittelbayerische newspaper in a headline on the incident.

A woman identified one of the men as Doherty, it is alleged. The Mittelbayerische newspaper reported her claiming to police: 'It was him, I recognised him.'

She said she heard all three men speaking English and rang the police after she got back to her flat.

Doherty is no stranger to controversy with his drug excesses and his turbulent relationship with supermodel Kate Moss.

He is in the southern German city of Regensburg filming 'Confessions of a Young Contemporary' for a French production company in which he plays a womanising 19th century poet.

In the costume drama, the 31-year-old plays Frenchman Alfred de Musset, who turned his tumultous love affair with female writer George Sand into a novel, The Confession of a Child of the Century.

Anglo-French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, 39, is playing the female lead.
