Mayweather must fight Khan or be accused of being afraid, claims legend Hagler

By Riath Al-Samarrai

Middleweight legend Marvin Hagler has questioned whether Floyd Mayweather is ‘afraid’ of fighting Amir Khan as uncertainty persists over a possible bout between the American great and Bolton’s former world champion.

Khan was furious when Mayweather performed a U-turn after months of negotiations and opted to fight Marcos Maidana on May 3.

But Khan revealed this week that Mayweather has again made contact to promise a future fight if the Brit beats Luis Collazo — and Hagler feels the WBC welterweight champion will need to make good on his words if he isn’t to appeared sacred of Khan.

He said: ‘We have seen what has happened with Khan. Even this guy Maidana that Khan beat (in 2010) who he has given this fight next, this is all crazy stuff.

‘I believe the best way is to fight the top and the way my career led me was fighting the best so this way you feel good about yourself when you have finished because you know you did not duck anyone. You gave everyone an opportunity.

‘With Mayweather we have got to see if he retires and he hasn’t given Manny Pacquiao a shot or given Khan a shot. There will be a conversation that maybe he was afraid of them.’

I ALREADY think Floyd doesn't really want to fight Khan. When has Floyd EVER fought anyone with hand speed that matches or surpasses his own? And people kill me talking about Khan doesn't 'deserve' the shot yet think Maidana does even though he's already been beaten AND dropped by Khan. The way I see it, its irrelevant who has the better recent record because I would want to beat whichever won against the other guy. What is Floyd proving by beating the one who lost? Lol.

No one in boxing (except Hagler) or who has a clue about boxing thinks Mayweather is afraid of Khan, the reason the fight is not happening is because Khan does not deserve the shot and also because Floyd realised it would not sell as a PPV because Khan is an over rated B level fighter who has lost 2 of his last 4 matches and nearly got beat by an aging blown up lightweight in his last fight. The facts are clear enough to see he has a poor recent record, is chinny, has been beat by men Mayweather would not even use as sparing partners and has been inactive to avoid getting beat before a possible Floyd match not the attributes and recent history of a man who deserves a crack at the P4P No1. If he wants the fight Khan should go and earn it like everyone else has to by beating top ranked fighters not lightweights and people ranked in the 20s and 30s.

Hagler is old school and never ducked a fight and he was in some amazing fights as well. I think his words will sting Mayweather into getting it on with Khan but stand by my opinion that 13 months out of the ring does not entitle anyone to be top of the list for a World Title Fight. Mayweather may have done Khan a big favour by allowing the ring rust to disappear before they meet after Khan as had a couple of good hard fights to prove to everyone he deserves that title shot. I honestly think if Khan had met him he would have been defeated by Mayweather simply because Khan had not had a fight in almost a year and a half, its not good preparation to take into the ring with the likes of Mayweather and I am surprised Khans advisors did not tell him so. Unless of course he's only in it for the payday?

I agree with Spursbadboy. Khan is very fast and can hit. I met Hagler and his managers in Monte Carlo many years ago.He was a supreme champion and I consider the best Middleweight I ever saw. I am quite certain he would have Koed Sugar Ray leonard if they had fought when Hagler was in his prime.

This is something i have been saying for a while yet all the Floydetts attack you for it, well now its come from a respected retired boxer. Back in Haglers day they couldn't get away with cherry picking like they do today but Floyd has made it an art form. It's very rare for Floyd to fight anyone unless he holds a massive advantage, he makes them go up a weight or down a weight or he makes sure he picks them once they have past there best or before thier at there best. Yes he's a great fighter and he's beaten great fighters but he seems scared to come out of his comfort zone and take a risk and fighting Maidana and not Khan is proof of that.

I've always said Khan gives Mayweather more trouble than a lot of other fighters simply because of his speed. As for him dodging Pac, why do people blame Mayweather? Pac was just as guilty for the fight not happening.

Hager for me was the best champion ever, he could brawl and box, and he had to really fight to get where he had to get , nothing was not given to him and only got recognition when he beat minter , Mayweather is very clever always fights people at his weight and not theirs , If he wanted pacman he would of made the fight happen but no made sure it did not and still does to this day, Khan is fast and does find the target, not saying he would beat Mayweather but I do think for first 4 to 5 rounds would cause mayweather major problems ( look at del a hoy fight) mayweather does not like quick hard hitting fighters who hit the target)
