CML in demand over stamp duty

Stamp duty should be overhauled to boost demand in the housing market, the Council of Mortgage Lenders said yesterday.

Setting out its 'mortgage market manifesto' for the upcoming election, the CML said stamp duty should be graduated, like income tax.

This would ensure that housebuyers do not pay increased duty on the entire purchase the moment they go above the higher rate threshold.
