Nicole Kidman's former brother-in-law has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of just 46.

Angus Hawley was in New York attending a business trip when is believed to have collapsed after returning from a swim on Saturday night.

Mr Hawley, who had four children with Nicole's sister Antonia, is said to have passed away en route to hospital and his devastated brother has described his death as 'sudden' and 'very unexpected'.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia today, David Hawley said: 'It's a real shock, he was one of the fittest men I've ever met – swimming everyday.'

Responding to a question about whether Angus had a history of heart problems, David answered: 'No, no, not that we know of', adding: 'He's so fit, I don't understand.'

He also described his brother as 'one of the most beautiful men that I have ever known.

'He is absolutely adored by everybody, he made everybody feel like he's their best friend and that's why everybody loved him. And he loved everybody else, it's just a really emotional time.'

Mr Hawley, who split with his wife Antonia in 2007, was a father to Lucia, 16, Hamish, 14, James, 12, and Sybella, eight.

The children are reportedly set to join the family in Sydney as they rally around Angus' second wife Prue Fisher, whom he married in Palm Beach in 2011.

Ms Fisher was seen at the family home today, looking drawn. Other relatives have been arriving at Darling Point following news of his death.

Just seven months ago the Kidman family were rocked by another heartbreak when Nicole's father, respected Sydney psychologist Dr. Antony Kidman, died aged 75 after a suspected heart attack in Singapore.

Appearing on Ellen last October, Nicole said her husband Keith Urban had to carry her, sometimes literally, because she was 'so devastated' by the loss.

Her ex-brother in law Mr Hawley, a business executive working for Valor Private Wealth, is said to have maintained a very healthy and active lifestyle.

Mr Hawley's current wife, Sydney fashion boutique manager Prue Fisher, was yesterday seen visiting the Bondi Icebergs public pool, a place her late husband often frequented.

Her late husband's brother said she was 'devastated' by the tragic news, adding she's 'terrible, terrible...it's a huge hole in our lives.

'They were absolutely devoted to each other and Prue's relationship with Angus's children was fantastic.

'His wife adores him, and he adored her, his four children, it's just so sad. It's a tragic loss to our family and to his family, it's just a nightmare.

'No matter what happens for the rest of her life, she'll still be my sister-in-law.'

A close friend of Mr Hawley, Merivale hotel founder Justin Hemmes, paid tribute to him yesterday, explaining to the Daily Telegraph that the pair became friends at just four years old.

'He was my next door neighbour but quickly became a best friend, one I was fortunate enough to have by my side ever since,' he said, describing Mr Hawley as 'the most caring, thoughtful and loving man.'

'The most loving father to his four wonderful children and adoring wife. His family was his treasure. His kids were his life,' he continued.

Mr Hawley married Antonia in 1996 and quickly embraced the celebrity lifestyle that came by association with in-laws Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.

He was often seen at red carpet events in Sydney and became friendly with Cruise and other high-profile names.

He has kept himself largely out of the spotlight following his split from Antonia and is known to have battled depression in the past.

The father of four checked himself into a Sydney rehab clinic in 2007 following a period of mental health issues.

He told Woman's Day in 2009: 'I was depressed, out of control and full of self-loathing, and I resorted to drugs to get through it.

'I wasn't in a happy place and it was an appalling thing, but I was sick, and at least I was big enough to do something about it.'

Antonia is a journalist and writer and is currently based in Singapore with her second husband Craig Marran with whom she shares two sons, Nicholas, two, and Alexander, one.
