From a devastating hurricane to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, tragedies dominated the the top 20 news stories of 2012.

While such haunting events grabbed national attention, the victories of President Obama and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps were also among the major news headlines.

To mark the end of 2012, MailOnline has compiled the top 20 list of the most popular news stories  according to the number of times our readers visited our website.

Devastation was given a name when Superstorm Sandy pummeled the Eastern Seaboard in late October.

New York and New Jersey were left especially battered by Sandy when the strong winds, heavy rain and an overwhelming storm surge struck the region.

At least 125 people were killed in the U.S. as a result of the storm, and a total of $62billion in damage was reported.

A possible 'October surprise' from real estate mogul and Apprentice host Donald Trump, promised to change the face of the presidential election.

Speculation grew that the tycoon may have unearthed divorce documents between President Obama and the first lady that would show that their relationship was anything but wedded bliss.

Douglas Kass, a Florida-based investor who appears on CNBC’s talkshow 'Squawkbox' where Trump is often a commentator, tweeted to his 48,000 followers: 'High above the Alps my Gnome has heard that Donald Trump will announce that he has unearthed divorce papers between the Prez and his wife.'

In the end, Trump's 'big reveal' was a challenge to President Obama to release his college records and passport applications.

In return, Trump pledged to donate $5million to the charity of Obama’s choice. The commander-in-chief did not oblige.

In a show of unbelievable strength, the Duchess of Cambridge managed to smile and laugh her way through a Diamond Jubilee tea party at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on September 14.

Prince William, on the other hand, was grim-faced as it was announced that the royal family would be pursuing legal action against the magazine, Closer.

The December 14 shooting massacre gave new meaning to the phrase 'parents' worst nightmare' when Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 26 people - 20 of them children - before turning his AR-15 assault rifle on himself.

In a speech that saw a return to the soaring rhetoric he has become known for since his election in 2008, Obama said he had ‘listened and learned’ from the American people during his campaign.

He paid tribute to his opponent and hopes they can 'work together in the coming weeks'. This bipartisanship had been echoed by Romney moments earlier during his concession speech.

The White House then marked the the first anniversary of the SEAL Team Six raid that killed the terror leader inside his Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound with a series of briefings and an NBC interview in the Situation Room designed to highlight the 'gutsy call' made by the president.

The Department of Homeland Security was forced in May to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al Qaeda,' 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like 'pork,' 'cloud,' 'team' and 'Mexico.'

Released under a freedom of information request, the information shedded new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats.

Two Texas women sued after state troopers subjected them to a humiliating and invasive 'roadside body cavity search' that was caught on video.

Female trooper Kellie Helleson is seen in the footage aggressively searching the private parts of Angel Dobbs, 38, and her niece, Ashley Dobbs, 24, in front of passing cars.

The women, who claim the trooper used the same rubber glove for both of them, were initially stopped by Helleson's colleague David Farrell on State Highway 161 near Irving after he saw one of them throw a cigarette butt out the window.

Farrell can be heard in the disturbing video questioning the pair about marijuana though he failed to find any evidence of the drug in the vehicle.

She was charged with first-degree statutory rape and sodomy, as well as incest and child pornography.

Her attorneys failed to convince a judge that she should get probation because she suffers from a psychological disorder.

Dr Brooke Kraushaar said a dependent-personality disorder caused Vanvlerah to participate in the sexual fantasies of Kenneth M. Kyle, 49, a college professor from California, even though she knew sex acts involving her then-five-month-old daughter were wrong.

Kyle was sentenced to 37-and-a-half years in prison in March after pleading guilty of abusing the infant during several occasions in 2009, according to St Louis Today.

Tina Brown, who edits the magazine and its sister website The Daily Beast, is known for her love of controversial covers to help boost public interest and sales.

But Brown's efforts would ultimately prove to be all for naught, as Newsweek published its last print issue earlier this month.

Instead of giving her a smooth, plump appearance, the implant had popped out and is left protruding in an ugly disc shape at the back of her cheek.

In the 20-second clip, the unidentified woman slowly manipulates it back into place while explaining: 'This is my implant flipping backwards.'

She adds: 'I don't think an implant's supposed to do that. It shouldn't be able to flip.'

What amazes me is that not one of the top 20 stories includes a bikini shot story. There are so many on here. And to be honest, I click on a lot of them. I love the misdirection of the titles also. There could be a title that says "American actress shows her love for French literature" and there is one picture of her reading "Les Miserable" on her lounge chair on the beach in her bikini, and ten more with her frolicking in the surf. Hilarious. As if the intent of the story was her love of literature. Not complaining though....Keep up the good work.
