She learned of the death of her ex-boyfriend - 'one of the great loves of my life' - due to an avalanche triggered by a massive earthquake early on Saturday.

Tragic though it was, Sophia Bush still managed to put herself together beautifully as she attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington D.C.

The 32-year-old actress looked like a Grecian goddess in a plunging blue-green gown featuring a dramatic sweeping train.

The White House Dinner in Washington attracted a whole host of stars to its glitzy confines and none looked more opulent than Sophia Bush.

The One Tree Hill star glammed it up with silver pointed-toe pumps, a sparkling clutch, and dangling bejewelled earrings with a matching ring.

She wore her dark hair swept back in an elegant updo and accentuated her pout with reddish pink lipstick that popped against the colour of her gown.

Sophia hung out at the festivities with gal pal Connie Britton, who starred on the first season of American Horror Story.

Earlier in the day, Sophia lost her ex-boyfriend and good friend, Google executive Daniel Fredinburg, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, triggering an avalanche on Mount Everest.

Around 18 climbers were killed while the overall death toll has exceeded 1800 people.

Dan, who is the head of privacy for GoogleX, died due to a head injury, according to a post made by his sister on his Facebook page.

Sophia and Dan ended their relationship amicably in February 2014, according to a source for People. They were first revealed to be dating in April 2013.

On Saturday, Sophia took to Instagram to express her grief, writing: 'Today I find myself attempting to pick up the pieces of my heart that have broken into such tiny shards, I'll likely never find them all.

'Today I, and so many of my loved ones, lost an incredible friend. Dan Fredinburg was one-of-a-kind. Fearless. Funny. A dancing robot who liked to ride dinosaurs and chase the sun and envision a better future for the world.

'His brain knew how to build it. His heart was constantly evolving to push himself to make it so. He was one of my favorite human beings on Earth. He was one of the great loves of my life. He was one of my truest friends.
