Officials of the Booksellers and Publishers Guild on Monday blocked the release of a book on the rise of crime against women in West Bengal, titled Parajayee Nari, by feminist writer Jasodhara Bagchi, citing political controversies.

Sources said the authorities never wanted to welcome any unwarranted political controversy over the issue, and that is why the release was cancelled.

The book was slated to be released at the main auditorium at the Book Fair ground this evening (Monday).

"I am shocked to hear the news," Bagchi said.

Bagchi was the former chairperson of West Bengal Women Commission during the erstwhile Left Front's rule.
