2,000 remember Milly at gala

Nearly 2,000 people attended a gala event to celebrate the life of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Pop Idol winner Will Young headlined the event, Music and Laughter for Milly, which will raise money for a charity set up in memory of the teenager.

The show at the London Palladium, hosted by comedian Brian Conley, also featured performances by Pop Idol finalists Jessica Garlick and Hayley Evetts and impressionist Alistair McGowan.

A spokeswoman for the theatre said just under 2,000 tickets had been sold for the one-night event.

All the money raised will be donated to Milly's Fund, which helps to increase awareness of personal safety among children and young adults.

Milly, 13, disappeared as she was walking home from a railway station in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March last year.

Her remains were discovered 20 miles away in Yateley Heath Woods, Hampshire, six months later.

Her killer is still at large despite a huge police hunt.
