Nepal warns earthquake death toll could hit 10,000

Relatives and friends of those who have not been seen or heard from since the tremors ripped through the region are using social media and the Red Cross in a desperate bid to locate their loved ones. Among the Americans missing are (clockwise from top right) Dawn Lightfoot, Josh Edwards, Brigida Martinez, Emmanuel O'Kane Gregory Travlio and Michelle Page. Their search comes as three American citizens, all on Mount Everest at the time, have been confirmed dead. American Google executive Dan Fredinburg was the first reported fatality on the mountain on Saturday. Dr Marisa Eve Girawong, 29, was also killed when ice and rock crushed the 18,000-foot-altitude base camp where she worked as a medic for Madison Mountaineering. Startling images from Nepal earthquake epicenter reveal entire hillside villages have been

Dramatic aerial photographs taken just miles from the epicenter of Saturday's Nepal earthquake in Gorkha reveal entire villages (left) reduced to rubble and flattened by mudslides. Already the number of dead reported in the western region has reached 47, but officials estimate the death toll will rise considerably, possibly hitting 10,000 as the nation picks up the pieces from the powerful quake. Indeed, across the rubble-strewn country, survivors and rescue teams are battling to find the missing amid now-ruined and collapsed historic buildings, (right) while the international community sends aid as fast as it can to the mountainous country. The full horror of the Nepalese earthquake which has so far claimed 2,500 lives and injured nearly 6,000 unfolded this morning in the towns of the Kathmandu Valley which have been reduced to rubble. Scarcely covered by white sheets, the bodies of those buried alive in their homes have been laid in the street. Overrun by the escalating disaster and in fear of any deadly aftershocks which could collapse yet more buildings, hospital staff have begun treating the wounded outside.
