Back to his roots: Shia LaBeouf shows off his bizarre hair style as he picks up plant supplies in California

He's known for his less than conventional lifestyle, but who know Shia LaBeouf was so green fingered?

The 28-year-old actor was spotted leaving a hydroponics store in Sherman Oaks, California on Thursday, laden down with supplies.

Carrying a fluorescent lamp, Shia looked to be indulging his long-term hobby - growing plants without soil.

Shia was spotted leaving No Stress Hydroponics with a long Sun Blazer fluorescent lamp under his arm.

The Fury star was dressed down in army boots, black jeans and a plain white t-shirt.

He was still rocking the bizarre hair cut he debuted earlier this year, a curly mohawk and braided rat-tail which trailed down his back.

Over recent months, Shia has grown out his hair and added to it with the longer hairpiece, which he frequently styles in a long plait. And it seems his unusual look is here to stay.

Shia was busy stocking up on supplies at his local store, after revealing in an interview with E! News back in 2012 that he and his girlfriend at the time were getting in touch with nature.

'Me and my girlfriend are getting ready to build an aquaponics farm up in Cambria. Aquaponics is the future, dude,' he declared.

'Aquaculture is the study of fish, and then hydroponics is the study of plants growing without soil,' the actor shared about the sustainable food growing system. 'So when you marry those two things you wind up with an ecosystem.'

'Say you get a big tankful of 12 catfish and on top of it you put a floaty device that has holes in it and you take a cup and poke a hole in that cup and put a seed in that cup and put it on top of that water. That will give you fruit forever and fish forever. You never have to change the water.'

'It's amazing and it's not seasonal, so say you're growing cucumbers in a warehouse in the winter, that's money!'
