'I think that 20/20 and Diane Sawyer did a fabulous job,' Esther told the showbiz-centred programme on Saturday. 'I think it was very educational and I hope to get more education.'

She filmed a short message that was aired during the broadcast as she recorded a sweet message for Bruce.

'I want you to be happy, and I love you,' Esther said.  'I was very proud of you when you stood on that podium in Montreal – I never thought I could be more proud of you, but I'm learning I can be.'

The reference to Montreal had to do with his impressive gold medal showing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in the Canadian city where he captured first place in the decathlon.

Esther and her husband William raised Bruce and his two sisters and younger brother in New York before relocating to Connecticut.
