Bruce Jenner has emerged for the first time since revealing he is a woman.

The 65-year-old stepped out in LA on Saturday looking happy, free, and as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders.

The night before, almost 17million people tuned in to hear him publicly admit for the first time he identifies as a female.

The former Olympian slipped out for an early morning drive after what was arguably the biggest night of his life.

As he stopped to gas up, Bruce appeared to pause to take a moment to contemplate the drama that had unfolded in the past 24 hours.

And he smiled.

So much has been made of the Jenner patriarch's changing appearance over the past years and decades, but on Saturday it seemed he had just undergone his biggest change yet: he finally looked at peace.

Happy: Bruce's smile was immediately obvious

The morning after: The 65-year-old was spotted taking an early morning drive in LA just hours after his amazing tell all interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC

At last: Much has been made of Bruce's changing appearance, but that look of peace is something his followers have never seen before

Pause: As Bruce stopped to gas up, he seemed to zone out for a minute, obviously with a lot to think about

Wearing a royal blue hoodie that concealed his identity to most onlookers, Bruce's grin to himself was still infectiously evident.

The grin was probably the most genuine one his legions of followers have ever seen him wear.

The tension for him leading up to the broadcast of Friday night's two hour interview is hard to imagine.

Breather: The former Olympian appeared to take a moment to contemplate the drama that had unfolded in the last 24 hours

Beaming: Bruce kept his hood up to conceal his identity as he gassed-up... but there was no hiding that smile

Justified: Bruce's grin seemed to confirm he knew he'd made the right decision to go ahead with the interview

Behind him: Within minutes of Friday's interview, Twitter was flooded with messages of support

Haters: Very few people in the celeb community had anything negative to say, and those that did were quickly rounded upon

HOW BRUCE JENNER'S FAMILY SHOWED SUPPORT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

KRIS JENNER: 'Not only was I able to call him my husband for 25 years and father of my children, I am now able to call him my hero.' (She also lashed out out at Diane Sawyer for claiming she did not provide a comment to ABC on Bruce).

KIM KARDASHIAN: 'Love is the courage to live the truest, best version of yourself. Bruce is love. I love you Bruce. #ProudDaughter'

KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN: 'Couldn't be a more proud daughter. With courage and bravery, let's change the world. I am honored to stand by Bruce's side and support him.'

He was finally going to face up to a truth that he has known almost all his life, a truth that has been speculated on and even scorned by commentators for years, a truth that he finally shared with the world just hours earlier.

And it is blatantly clear from the expression on his face that he knows he made the right decision.

Bruce has yet to make his physical debut as a woman, but during Friday's interview he revealed he has plenty of outfit options, giving a sneak peak into his wardrobe packed with dresses and heels.

She's a lady: Bruce told the world on Friday that he has always had the soul of a female

Painful: He revealed he once contemplated suicide, but did not go through with it because he wanted to see how his story ends

Dying to meet her: Bruce has yet to make his physical debut as a woman, but during Friday's interview he revealed he has plenty of outfit options

For now he continued to wear the same androgynous clothes we've gotten used to seeing him in; along with the zip-up tracksuit top he wore a pair of pale blue pants, white socks with black and white cow-patterned Moccasins, and a pair of driving gloves.

And while he kept the hood up, it was hardly the most incognito we have ever seen him. His zip was not pulled up all the way to hide his shorn Adam's apple; his drawstrings around his hood were not pulled tight to hide his pair of earrings, while his long hair was allowed to slip out over his shoulder.

Even his aviator shades were tellingly transparent, rather than the face-hiding over-sized variety favoured by camera shy celebrities - all perhaps little signs Bruce is slowly but surely becoming comfortable with the idea of facing the world as the woman he knows he is.

Either or: On Saturday he kept his outfit genderless - along with the zip-up tracksuit top he wore a pair of pale blue pants, white socks with black and white cow-patterned Moccasins, and a pair of driving gloves.

Plain sight: Although his hood was up Bruce clearly wasn't hiding - his zip and drawstrings were not pulled tight, revealing his long hair and earrings

No rock star: Even his shades were tellingly transparent - not the usual face hiding fare favoured by celebs

Slowly but surely: With the support of his family and friends - and apparently the vast majority of the public - Bruce knows he has nothing to fear as he progresses into the next chapter of his life

He made the biggest step towards that on Friday when he tearfully told Sawyer in front of millions of viewers: 'For all intents and purposes, I am a woman.

'My brain is much more female than it is male. That's what my soul is. Bruce lives a lie. She is not a lie.' He firmly added: 'I can't do it anymore.'

During the interview, Bruce also admitted that he has been regularly taking female hormones - and plans to completely transform into a woman.

Emotional: Speaking in front of millions of viewers on ABC last night, Bruce revealed tearfully: 'To all intents and purposes, I am a woman'

'It's who I am': Despite his 'female soul', Bruce said he does not describe himself as a woman stuck in a man's body. 'I'm a person and that's who I am,' he said. 'I'm not stuck in anyone's body. It's just me. It's who I am.' He added that the interview would be his last one as Bruce

But he said he was still attracted to females. 'I was never attracted to the guys,' he told Diane, explaining how he has always enjoyed a good sex life.

Jenner added: 'I am not gay.I am, as far as I know, heterosexual. As far as I know, I've never been with a guy. I've always been married, raising kids.'

And he denied that his revelations were for publicity purposes. Instead, he made them due to his inability to continue to 'pull the curtain', he said.

Indeed, hiding his identity was so painful for Bruce that it once left him contemplating suicide to escape from the never-ending scrutiny, he revealed.

Many viewers and celebrities were taking to social media last night to congratulate Bruce on making a giant leap for the transgender community. Lady Gaga tweeted: '#BruceJennerABC Now that is bravery', before telling her fans to 'empower people like Bruce' globally by 'being loving & not mean'.

Meanwhile, Bruce's 17-year-old daughter, Kylie Jenner, tweeted an emotional message to her father. 'Understandingly, this has been very hard for me. You will hear what I have to say when I'm ready to but this isn't about me. I'm so proud of you, Dad. You are so brave. My beautiful Hero,' she wrote.

BRUCE JENNER'S GENDER TRANSITION TIMELINE

January 2012: Ellen Pierson, who married Kris Jenner's ex-husband Robert Kardashian, claimed Bruce had been a cross-dresser 'for years.' She claimed his first wife Chrystie Crownover told her he had a penchant for women's clothing, shoes and lingerie.

That same month Star magazine alleged that Kris was unfazed by her husband's odd habit and that he continued to cross-dress for years after their 1991 wedding.

January 2014: The Olympic gold medalist reportedly underwent a laryngeal shave to flatted his Adam's Apple.

May 2014: Bruce refused to cut his long hair for Kim Kardashian's wedding to Kanye West, despite pressure from the bride and his estranged wife Kris Jenner.

August 2014: Photos appeared to show Bruce had breasts, sparking rumors he was having hormone therapy as he explored the idea of transitioning from male to female.

September 2014: As his divorce from Kris was being finalized, Bruce had started growing out his hair and shaving his legs.

November 2014: He was spotted on various occasions wearing nail polish, a sports bra and Spanx.

December 2014: Bruce's first wife Chrystie Scott (nee Crownover) spoke out publicly in support of her former husband, saying 'I just want him to be happy.'

January 2015: When asked about her step-father's changing appearance, Kim Kardashian said he was on a 'journey' and added: 'He'll share whenever the time is right.'

February 2015: TMZ reported that Bruce told his family that he has known he was meant to be a female since the age of five.

March 2015: People magazine claims his ex-wives Chrystie Crownover and Linda Thompson knew how he felt and both were supportive.

The same month he had rhinoplasty to give himself a more feminine nose.(This followed years of surgical procedures which began with a face-lift in the 1980s.)

March 31: It was claimed he'd had breast implants.

April 6: ABC News announced that Bruce would do an 'far-ranging' interview with Diane Sawyer.

April 24: Bruce finally confirms his gender transition, telling Sawyer: 'I am a woman.'
