Causing a splash! New Benidorm character sparks poolside brawl after nearly drowning his grand-daughter in family feud

Holidays are supposed to be a time of relaxation.

But, for Benidorm's new Dawson family, that couldn't be further from the truth - as fresh scenes for a forthcoming episode illustrated on Saturday.

The much-maligned clan, who were announced as new cast additions earlier this month, were seen filming dramatic sequences in the ITV show's eighth series.

Ensuring more cringe-worthy laughs for fans of the sit-com, Grandad Dawson - played by former Emmerdale actor Bobby Knutt - pushes little Jodie Dawson (Honor Kneafsey) in the hotel pool where she nearly drowns.

Naturally, mum Sheron (Doc Martin's Julie Graham) is enraged - and lashes out at the floral shirt-clad patriarch.

At that point, husband Eddie (Steve Edge) and son Rob Dawson (Josh Bolt) step in to try and diffuse the poolsiide drama - with the help of  Les Marshal, played by Tim Healey.

Fortunately, a hotel lifeguard intervenes - and stops a potential bun fight at the infamous Solana Resort.

Fortunately, once the scenes were completed the actors managed to relax and share in the tongue-in-cheek experience, which will help comprise seven new episodes for 2016.

The Dawson family are the latest holidaymakers to join the long-running comedy, which also stars Johnny Vegas and Joan Collins.

In a press release earlier this year, ITV said: ‘Many of your favourite holidaymakers will be appearing throughout the new series, with the ever-resourceful Solana staff including Joyce Temple Savage (Sherrie Hewson), Les/Lesley (Tim Healy) and Mateo (Jake Canuso) back to ensure everyone's holiday goes to plan.’

The sixth series averaged 6.8million viewers, with the opening episode scoring ratings of 7.9 million. Benidorm's figures have been rising, with the 2014 broadcasts up 2.8 million viewers and 7 share points on 2013, according to Comedy.co.uk.

Earlier this year, ITV commissioner Elaine Bedell says: 'After another successful run on screen we're thrilled that a new series is about to start shooting on location in Spain.

'We're equally pleased that some familiar faces from the Solana's past will be making a welcome return to the sunshine.’

The new cast-member additions come as several fan-favourites left the series, including the Garvey family and Scottish actor Kenny Ireland, who sadly died following a battle with cancer.

Most famous for his long-running Benidorm role as Donald Stewart, he was written out of the series in June 2013 so he could concentrate on treatment in a bid to beat the disease - although died in late July.

A spokesperson for ITV said at the time: 'He was a much loved actor, not only by the cast and crew on Benidorm but by the millions of fans out there.

'He appeared as Donald Stewart in Benidorm from the first episode and helped play a huge part in its success. He will be greatly missed.'
