David Beckham has kicked off his 40th birthday celebrations by sharing an intimate snap with Instagram followers - just 24-hours after opening an account on the social media site.

The former footballer made his first foray on the enormously popular picture messaging service on Saturday morning from his luxury suite at the five-star Amanjena resort in Marrakech, Morocco, where he will celebrate the milestone with 60 close friends and family members.

Pictured in bed and with one of his trademark sleeve tattoos on full display, Beckham is at his brooding best as he gazes into the camera lens.

Good morning and hello! David Beckham has shared his first snap with Instagram followers as he prepares to celebrate his 40th birthday at the five-star Amanjena resort in Marrakech, Morocco

Captioning the shot, he wrote: 'Good morning and hello! It’s great to finally be on Instagram, been a long time coming but I can’t wait to start sharing all my special moments with you.

'Thank you for all your birthday messages so far. Looking forward to a great day with friends and family x.'

Beckham and fashion designer wife Victoria touched down in the Moroccan capital on Friday evening ahead of a weekend long celebration with a host of celebrity friends - among them TV chef Gordon Ramsay and his family.

Victoria shared a sweet snap of herself with the birthday boy on her own Instagram page, posing in front of their large private jet after their long-haul flight to the African country.

'So excited to be celebrating David's birthday x #DB40 x vb,' she wrote along with the snap.

She stuck to using her self-made hashtag for the occasion, #DB40, that she began using earlier in the week.

Dropping hints: Earlier in the week, Victoria let on that she and her husband were heading to Morocco to celebrate his 40th with an Instagram snap of a potential outfit, along with the hashtag #DB40

The 41-year-old had previously shared a sneak peek of their getaway when she posted a picture of a vintage Yves Saint Laurent top along with a suggestive memo.

'What to wear in Marakesh (sic)? Vintage Yves Saint Laurent #DB40 x vb,' she quipped.

The Amanjena hotel's restaurant specialises in Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, but if the group tire of the local delicacies there's also a Thai restaurant on site, while a private dining space could be hired out for David's birthday dinner.

A cigar bar is also on hand for those moments that simply must be accompanied by a smoke.

A boutique is also located inside the resort, meaning Victoria and co. won't even need to set foot in the nearby souks to stock up on locally crafted products, while David's wife can also relax in the renowned spa which features two Turkish-style hammams.

It is not the first time the Beckhams have stayed at the resort, with Victoria and David renewing their vows there during a romantic getaway in 2004.

Luxury: David's party is being hosted at the Amanjena Resort Amanjena (peaceful paradise), which is the first Aman resort on the African continent and is located just outside the ancient city of Marrakech
