He famously quipped that he couldn't wait to see his brother Prince William 'suffer more' with two young children and today, Prince Harry finally got his wish.

Harry, 30, is currently in Australia and was pictured relaxing at an Australian Football League match in Perth shortly after the announcement was made.

The match, between the West Coast Eagles of Perth and Sydney's GWS Giants, saw the home side deal out a drubbing to the visitors and running out the winners by an impressive 87 points.

Harry, who is said to be 'delighted' after hearing the news of his new niece's arrival, is currently on secondment to the Australian Defence Force.

Next month, Harry, now the royal fifth-in-line, will travel to New Zealand for an official tour that will see him stop off in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland among others.

The 30-year-old will also visit the Linton Military Camp near the city of Palmerston North where he will, after meeting local soldiers, be taught how to do the Haka.

Although Harry was briefly back in the UK on Sunday, commitments in Australia meant he had to fly back the next day and is now unlikely to meet his new niece until after the New Zealand tour.

Like Prince Charles, who last week told journalists that he was hoping for a granddaughter, Harry has got his wish regarding the sex of the new baby.

Asked how he felt about the impending arrival shortly after the news of the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy was announced in September, he said:

'I can't wait to see my brother suffer more. With any luck, if it's a girl, he'll suffer even greater. I'd love to see him try and cope with that.'

The announcement that Prince Harry was just hours away from his wish coming true was made at 6am this morning, with Kensington Palace telling Press that the Duchess was in labour.

The little princess made her entrance less than three hours later at 8.34am, tipping the scales at 8lbs 3oz and sending the royal fans outside into a frenzy of excitement.

Buckingham Palace formally confirmed her birth at 12.30pm, placing a notice on the gates in continuance of a royal tradition that began in 1837.

Huge crowds have since gathered outside, with queues forming among well-wishers hoping to snap a quick photo.

At the Lindo Wing, all eyes are now on the door as the wait for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their new daughter begins.

Although some sources have said an exit is possible this afternoon, it would be a deviation from the routine established when Prince George was born.

On that occasion, the couple waited for 24 hours before emerging and welcomed visitors, among them Michael and Carole Middleton and the Prince of Wales, to the hospital first.

Prince William is, however, expected to make an appearance and will travel back to Kensington Palace to see his 22-month-old son Prince George.
