Jeffrey Dahmer killed over ketchup? Killer tells why he smashed Dahmer's head

Jeffrey Dahmer was killed behind bars at Wisconsin’s Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994. It was perhaps a fitting end for a man who was accused and convicted of killing, dismembering and partially consuming 17 male victims during his reign of terror from 1978 to 1991, but what does ketchup have to do with it?

According to Christopher Scarver, the man who killed Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer cannibal liked to provoke fellow inmates by constructing disembodied limbs from food served in the prison cafeteria and sprinkling his creations with blood-red ketchup from a packet. Like the other inmates, Carver was less than amused. He was disgusted.

According to an April 28, 2015 report by the New York Post, Scarver's self-appointed executioner was himself a convicted killer. Despite having been sentenced for his own transgressions, he found his fellow inmate's antics to be disturbing. As for Jeffrey Dahmer's ketchup-drizzled creations, "He would put them in places where people would be," Carver said.

"He crossed the line with some people — prisoners, prison staff. Some people who are in prison are repentant — but he was not one of them," Carver explained. Thanks to Jeffrey Dahmer's poor rapport with the other prisoners, he had to be accompanied by a guard at all times when he was not confined to his cell, until the morning of Nov. 28, 1994, when something was different. Guards left three inmates, including Dahmer and Carver, unshackled and unattended so they could clean the bathrooms adjacent to the facility's gym.

Seeing his chance, Carver fetched a metal bar from an exercise area and confronted Jeffrey Dahmer for the first time about his penchant for killing men and eating their remains, showing the cannibal killer a newspaper article he carried in his pocket detailing the sickening crimes. Then he brought down the metal bar on Dahmer's head twice, crushing his skull and killing him on the spot. When it was over, Carver found the third man who had been left unattended to clean the bathroom and killed him, too. The second victim's name was Jesse Anderson. The 37-year-old man was serving a sentence for murdering his wife.

Upon his release from solitary confinement after 20 years, Carver began looking for a book deal in order to share his story, reported the Huffington Post. He already has several self-published books available in digital format. According to his website, "Over a period of 18 years, Mr. Scarver earned his way out of solitary confinement where he was placed 20 years ago (1994). For the past two years he has lived in a medium security prison without incident."
