Final salute for a fallen hero: Hundreds of NYPD officers stand in honor guard for 'exceptional' 25-year-old cop 'shot dead by career criminal' as his body is taken out from hospital

  • Officer Moore, 25, has died of his injuries at Queens General Hospital
  • Demetrius Blackwell fired gun 'at least twice' on cop, it is alleged
  • Officer Brian Moore shot in head and chest
  • Suspect spent years behind bars for attempted murder conviction in 2000, after he shot at another man in a car
  • He was charged Sunday with two counts of attempted murder of an officer
  • He is also facing weapons and assault charges and remains in custody

A 25-year-old police officer shot in the head over the weekend while attempting to stop a man suspected of carrying a handgun died Monday from his injuries, the third New York City officer slain on duty over the five months.

Brian Moore, who was in a coma after undergoing brain surgery following the Saturday evening shooting, was pronounced dead at a Queens hospital with his family at his bedside, including his police officer father, uncle and cousin.

Hundreds of uniformed officers stood at attention outside the medical center and lined up down the block to salute the ambulance carrying his body out. Afterward many could be seen crying and consoling one another.

'He proved himself to be an exceptional young officer,' Police Commissioner William Bratton said, noting Moore had made more than 150 arrests in less than five years on the job and earned meritorious service medals.

'We don't give them out easily.'

Residents of the Queens neighborhood where he worked struggled with emotion as they left flowers at Moore's 105th Precinct base.

'I'm sorry,' said one woman who chocked back tears, reported the New York Daily News.

'He took a bullet for the whole neighborhood.'

Bratton called Moore 'an extraordinary young man' and said his death is 'a great loss to his family, a great loss to this department, and a great loss to this profession and to this city.'

NYPD Officers and others saluted as Moore's body left the hospital. Bill Bratton did his best to comfort crying family members outside the medical center as Moore's dead body was taken away.

Demetrius Blackwell, 35, is expected to face a murder charge for allegedly shooting Officer Moore in Queens Village on Saturday, reports The New York Daily News.

Blackwell spent eight years in prison for the same offence, it was revealed on Sunday.

Demetrius Blackwell was reportedly approached by Officer Brian Moore and his partner in an unmarked police car on Saturday night after he was seen adjusting his waistband suspiciously.

As the plainclothes officers exchanged words with him, Blackwell allegedly turned and fired at least twice without warning, hitting Moore. The cop's colleague, Officer Erik Jansen, then radioed for help.

Blackwell was convicted of attempted murder in 2000, after he shot at a car driven by a man he had just robbed at gunpoint, theNew York Daily News reported.

Moore, 25, was rushed to hospital in a patrol car, where he died on Monday.

He was placed in a medically-induced coma to relieve pressure on his brain prior to his death.

Following the shooting, on-foot officers and helicopters started searching for the suspect, who had fled. Soon after, Blackwell was arrested near the crime scene in a house on the block where he lives.

Blackwell was arraigned on Sunday afternoon, the Queens district attorney's office told the AP. He wore a seemingly ripped white prison suit. His charges include two counts of attempted murder of an officer.

On Saturday night, Police Commissioner William Bratton told a news conference at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center that the two officers 'did not have an opportunity to get out [of the car] and return fire'.

After the incident, witnesses described Blackwell to responding officers and pointed them in the direction he ran, Bratton said. Officers searched house by house, while some walked on roofs.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who also attended the conference alongside other officials, said the shooting was a painful reminder of the risks that offices nationwide take every day in performing their duties.

Speaking of Moore, who has been on the job since July 2010, he added: 'Our hearts are with his family, his loved ones. Our hearts are with his extended family, the men and women of the NYPD.'

The shooting of Moore, who comes from a family of police officers, instantly evoked fears of the December 2014 slayings of two uniformed officers as they sat in their patrol cars in Brooklyn.

In that incident, the suspect had posted online that he was seeking retribution against officers for the death of 43-year-old Eric Garner in an apparent chokehold by police on Staten Island last July.

The killings of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos - whose funerals thousands of cops from across America - strained an already tense relationship between city police unions and de Blasio.

Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch turned his back on the mayor at a hospital on the day of the killings and said that de Blasio had 'blood on his hands'.

But on Saturday night, Lynch was among the officials who attended the news conference about the shooting of Moore, who was working out of the 105th precinct when he was shot around 6.15pm.

Lynch could be seen shaking the mayor's hand and speaking briefly with him afterward. According to CBS, Moore was in surgery on Sunday as doctors battled to keep him stable. He eventually died on Monday.

In a Twitter statement shortly after the shooting, the Mayor's office said: 'Please keep the injured police officer, his family, and the entire New York City Police Department in your thoughts tonight.'

Bratton said that although Blackwell has a criminal record that includes a weapons possession charge, the suspect made no such anti-police postings prior to the near-fatal shooting.

Indeed, he was being pursued by the anti-crime officers because of his behavior, Bratton said. According to media reports, Blackwell has served time for attempted murder in the past.

Neighbors near the scene of the shooting - which occurred at 104 Road and 212 Street - were surprised by the violence, saying the area had numerous family homes and was quiet and safe.

'You walk down the street, no trouble,' 52-year-old Sandreaus Adam told AP. 'This is not a neighborhood where you're just going to hear shots.'

Moore, from Long Island, is the fifth NYPD officer to have been shot since December 2014.

Ramos, 40, and Liu, 32, were fatally gunned down by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, on December 20.

And only two weeks later, Andrew Dossi, 30, and Aliro Pellerano, 38, were shot while responding to a grocery store robbery on January 5. In this incident ,both of the police officers survived.

Blackwell is also facing weapons and assault charges. It remains unclear if he has a lawyer.
