She has certainly walked more red-carpets during her expansive career than many of the younger stars and still shows them exactly how it's done right.

Cher, 68, rocked a sparkling floor length Marc Jacobs gown at the Met Gala in New York on Monday, as Kim Kardashian told her instagram followers that the icon was the inspiration for her own sexy dress.

The legendary entertainer was accompanied to the event by designer Marc Jacobs, who designed her custom burgundy and blue sequin plunging v-neck dress.

The singer, who has sold over 100 million records worldwide, wore her black hair in her signature long style draped around her shoulders.

It's a demure look compared to some of Cher's more outrageous and memorable outfits, one of which was the inspiration for Kim Kardashian's showstopper dress.

This year's theme was China: Through The Looking Glass - but Cher was also a guest at the very first Met Gala in 1971 when the theme was Fashion Plate.

Kim Kardashian shared a snap of the singer from that year's red carpet, clad in a see-through and feathered gown which left little to the imagination.

The reality TV star arrived on Monday at this year's Gala in a nude lace see-through dress - and took to Instagram to explain that Cher's outfit from the 70s was her inspiration.

Kim captioned the shot: 'Tonight's inspiration! Cher at the 1st ever Met Gala! I just met her and told her this photo was my inspiration for my dress tonight! She is so beautiful! So happy I met her!'

Cher, who turns 69 later this month, is - like Kim - part Armenian and also visited the country to pay homage to her roots - much like the KUWTK star did earlier this year.

Marc looked sharp arriving with the star in a classic tux and appearing to carry a small man-bag.

Although they are both 5'9" tall - he was dwarfed by the singer who was probably wearing high heels underneath her dress.

Kim Kardashian unsurprisingly flouted the event's 'no selfies' rule and shared a snap from inside the Gala with the legendary singer.

Sounding suitably star-struck to meet Cher, Kim posted a picture alongside the youthful Believe singer.

Both Kim and Cher looked smooth and fresh-faced in the shot which Kim captioned, 'This beauty, this icon! I'm so so happy I met her! We spoke about our amazing Armenian journeys!'
