From Hobbit to hero? Martin Freeman cast for unnamed role in Marvel's next blockbuster Captain America: Civil War

Martin Freeman has joined the Marvel universe for an 'as-yet undisclosed' role in the new Captain America movie.

The Hobbit and Sherlock actor will star alongside Chris Evans as Captain America and Robert Downer Jr. as Iron Man in the new film.

The blockbuster, entitled Captain America: Civil War is currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and is scheduled for release in May 2016.

'From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us,' Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in an announcement today.

'We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.' 

A recent casting notice for the Disney action movie, set to be called Captain America: Civil War, includes a detailed synopsis of the planned movie. 

'Billionaire Tony Stark is pitted against Captain America aka Steve Rogers in an ethical face-off over the U.S. government's Superhuman Registration Act, which requires all superpowered individuals register their powers and report to S.H.I.E.L.D.' it states.

The new film will lead on from the events in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, which premiered last week, and will find Captain America and Iron Man on opposing sides.

Captain America: Civil War also stars Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner with Daniel Bruehl cast as villain Baron Zemo. 

Casting notices for actors and extras have been posted stating that cameras will start rolling in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 4 and shooting is expected to last until August 8. 

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will return to direct the next installment that's scheduled for a May 6, 2016, release.
