The famous character was brought to life in the 1945 story books entitled, The Railway Series.

Proving to be the series fan favourite, a spin off TV series was created for the fictional star in 1984, Thomas And Friends and it has been producing episodes ever since.

The four time Gold Logie winner dressed and acted as the rounded fictional character while celebrating 70 years of the beloved tank engine in Melbourne at the Thomas And Friends event.

The special occasion was held at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne - the largest in the southern hemisphere.

Playing the role to a tee, Newton accessorised with a black leather banded gold watch on his left hand, while tucking a compass into his vest as the chain lazily hung off the suit.

Keeping in theme with the flamboyant outfit, dark thin eyebrows were painted on the TV presenter's forehead as he entertained children at the spectacle.

Newton appeared on radio station KIIS in an interview with Kyle and Jackie O hours before dressing up in character to talk about the anniversary event in which he was donating his time to.

'...Kids love it [Thomas The Tank Engine] so much, particularly our grandchildren and they're coming along, so it'll be a good morning...'
