Judi Dench steps out in New York with boyfriend David Mills... after admitting she was told she 'didn't have the face' for movies

Dame Judi Dench looked bright and happy on Wednesday as she left her Manhattan hotel.

The award-winning actress wore a cream and white ensemble as she and her boyfriend David Mills stepped out into the city.

Judi has been in New York to promote her new film The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, though there was a time when she was told she didn't have the 'face' for movies.

The Skyfall actress said: 'I went and met (the director) and I was at the Old Vic at the time and he asked me some questions and in those days, you weren't filmed and he said to me, "Well it's been very nice meeting you but I'm sorry not this film and probably not any film as you have every single thing wrong with your face."

'Well I got to do a few films after that so I'm very pleased he was wrong.'

Despite proving the director wrong, Judi has never and will never reveal the name of the man who turned her down.

Speaking at The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, she said: 'I can't because I've never, in all of time, since it happened - it was a long time ago - have said the name of the director but it was for a big film.'

Dench has been enjoying her time in New York at the Crosby Hotel with her boyfriend of four years David.

Judi and David live just a few fields apart from one another in the English countryside.

Their friendship blossomed into romance after Judi agreed to officially open the red squirrel enclosure at David's British Wildlife Centre.

'I wasn't even prepared to be ready for it,' she told The Times. 'It was very, very gradual and grown up.'

While the pair lead independent lifestyles and have chosen not to live together, they share the same sense of humour.

'It's absolutely wonderful because there's somebody who makes me laugh. Isn't it lovely?', she enthused. 

The Philomena actress was married to husband of thirty years, Michael Williams, but he sadly passed away in 2001 following his battle with lung cancer.
