- Steve Higgins was repulsed and threw the spread back up
- Fallon couldn't understand why someone would eat the black condiment
The Tonight Show has aired the hilarious moment presenter Jimmy Fallon and announcer Steve Higgins tasted Australian staple Vegemite for the first time - and it wasn't pretty.
Higgins was so repulsed by the spreadable treat that he gagged and threw it back up claiming it's not 'for the American palette.'
While Fallon managed to keep the national condiment down, he couldn't understand why someone would eat the black, salty, yeast byproduct and said its flavours hit the taste buds 'in waves'.

The Tonight Show has aired the hilarious moment presenter Jimmy Fallon and announcer Steve Higgins (pictured) tasted Australian staple Vegemite for the first time
During a segment of the hugely popular American TV show called 'Kids Letters', Fallon reads out ideas, jokes and suggestions from real children around the world.
However they didn't know what they were getting themselves into this week when Fallon revealed a letter from seven-year-old Charlie and 4-year-old Jedd from Australia challenging Steve Higgins to a Vegemite taste test.
'I live in Australia, I love your show. My favourite part is the game and songs,' the adorable letter said.
'I think Steve Higgins should try Vegemite because he doesn't really do anything.'

And although Higgins had never tried Vegemite before, he took the challenge head first and spread the yeasty paste over a slice of bread.
Vegemite is one of Australia's most-loved breakfast spreads
Without trepidation, he took a huge bite from the bread to a round of applause from the audience.
However things soon turned nasty when the flavours hit Higgins' taste buds and the look of repulsion on his face said it all.
After a few seconds, he couldn't take it anymore and spit the slice of Australian cuisine out onto the floor.
The audience and Fallon clearly relished in Higgins' discomfort and laughed as the band played in the background.
Looking directly at the camera with his teeth blackened from the Vegemite, Higgins said: 'I think it's not for the American palette'.
'Apparently French people think root beer tastes weird because they've never tasted it before, this is like that, I'm sure it's delicious in Australia.'
It wasn't long before Fallon's inquisitive nature got the better of him and he couldn't help but take a taste of the questionable delight.
Higgins spread the 'thinnest amount' of Vegemite on the toast for his friend while Fallon sarcastically claimed it looked delicious.

To the sound of Higgins' saying it looks like Nutella gone bad' and 'it smells like beer', Fallon took a nibble of the bread

Fallon looked disgusted and claimed the taste hits you in waves and waves.
'It's like beef bouillon on a brewers floor,' Higgins said taking delight in the presenters repulsion.
Taking to the comments section of the video, disgruntled Australian fans of Vegemite were angered at the way Fallon and Higgins ate the spread.
'I cry every time an American eats it wrong,' one YouTube user said.
'Oh Higgins... so yummy on fresh baked bread with butter. You gotta eat it the right way,' another commenter said.
'As an Aussie who constantly fights with Americans about this, this makes me so sad!!! It's all about the butter to Vegemite ratio.. You need to make it REALLY thin, not thick like that (gross).'
