Which internet company is best to watch Netflix? New streaming TV service releases its first download speed index for Australia… and Telstra does NOT top the list

  • Netflix has conducted its first Australian ISP Index test
  • TPG scored the No.1 spot on the list with 3.35 megabits per second
  • Interestingly, Telstra was last on the index with  2.23 Mbps
  • The index shows how well Netflix rank on each network in peak hours
  • In New Zealand, Snap came first with an average speed of 3.77 Mbps

A Netflix test has revealed which Australian internet company provides the best speed for streaming the TV service - and it's not Telstra.

Australian internet service TPG ranked first on Australia's first Netflix's ISP speed index results for April, scoring an average speed of 3.36 megabits per second (Mbps) with Optus coming in at a close second with 3.27 Mbps.

Interestingly, one of Australia's leading internet providers Telstra came out last on the list, recording a dismal average of 2.23 Mbps.

The internet provider was slammed in March for providing slow internet speed for iiNet customers, who blamed service disruptions for the weak connection.

1. TPG - 3.36 Mbps

2. Optus - 3.27 Mbps

3. iiNet - 3.24 Mbps

4. Primus - 3.03 Mbps

5. Exetel - 2.56 Mbps

Internet companies iiNet, Primus, Exetel and Dodo all scored above Telstra on the index list, recording average speeds of 3.24 Mbps to 2.29 Mbps.

In a blog post announcing the addition of Australia and New Zealand to Netflix's list of 29 countries ranked on the speed index, the company said they expect Australia's performance to improve over the coming months.

Australia came in 18th place when the internet speed was compared to the other 29 countries, while New Zealand ranked slightly better, taking 14th place on the list.

'We are working closely with these ISPs and expect performance to improve in the coming months,' the blog post said.

'The Netflix ISP Speed Index lists the average prime time bitrate for Netflix content streamed to Netflix members during a particular month.

'For 'prime time' we take the peak three hours of Netflix streaming on a daily basis per ISP.'

The company measures the speed in megabites per second, the average bitrate for Netflix content streamed by Netflix members per ISP.

They measure speed across all available devices.

Excluded from Netflix's measurements are a small number of plans, devices for which they can't record accurate bitrates and streaming over identified mobile networks.

In New Zealand, internet provider Snap led the ISP speed index with an average speed of 3.77 Mbps.

The results will be updated on a monthly basis and any changes will be recorded.
