True Detective trailer gives a grim glimpse into Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams' characters ahead of season 2 of the crime series

True Detective season 2 will premiere in just over a month, but the HBO series gave away little plot information in a trailer released on Thursday.

Instead, the award-winning anthology series focused on its four main characters - played by Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams - with each speaking a single line.

'My strong suspicion is we got the world we deserve,' intoned Colin's character of Detective Ray Velcoro early in the video.

Sporting a full moustache and a grim attitude, Colin seemed to be the new incarnation of season 1's Rust Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey.

Moving from Louisiana to southern California for the new season, the mysterious show from creator Nic Pizzolatto will focus on three police officers and a criminal, all navigating a conspiracy after one of them - Taylor's character of Officer Paul Woodrugh - finds a murder victim.

After Colin's dark comment began the trailer, Vince's criminal, Frank Semyon, wondered about who he was: 'Sometimes your worst self is your best self.'

Taylor's Paul seemed to be struggling with identity as well when he said: 'This isn't me doing this. This isn't me.'

Surprisingly, it was the most moral-seeming, principled character - Rachel's Detective Ani Bezzerides - who had the darkest line of all.

'This girl's gone missing. Nobody cares. The interior's poisoned and suddenly worth billions. Nobody cares,' she said, glaring at the world and beating on a punching dummy.

The eight episodes of the second season will premiere on June 21, with Fast & Furious' Justin Lim directing the first two instalments.

Season 1 of True Detective received rave reviews in 2014 and was later nominated for 11 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series.
