When glamour goes wrong! Neon suits, giant puffball skirts and a leather TROUSER dress... the worst dressed stars on the weekend's red carpet at Cannes
- The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival opened on Wednesday with back to back glitzy events
- Hollywood and British stars jetted in for their moment on the red carpet under the southern French sun
- Models and actresses grabbed attention in thigh-high gowns, plunging necklines and huge draped skirts
The Cannes Film Festival remains one of the glitziest events in the showbiz calendar but with such pressure to impress comes some sure-fire sartorial howlers.
There must be something in the air, for the coastal French resort seems to encourage those who attend to be a little, shall we say, braver when it comes to their outfit choices.
Clothes that wouldn't be seen in more sober climes, New York, London or Paris among them, seem to get an airing in the super-bling atmosphere of one of the world's most luxurious coastlines.

Is it a dress? Is it a pair of trousers? It's both! French actress Sophie Marceau wears a confusing ensemble of leather trousers with black and white drapes giving the illusion of a skirt
Thumbs up? We're not so sure...but Sophie Marceau seems pretty chuffed with her outfit
Start wearing a pant dress like Sophie
Talk about a style risk! French actress, Sophie Marceau, confused the crowd in Cannes during the, 'Sea of Trees,' premiere. The verdict hasn't been made yet on whether her risk was a success of failure but we're diggin' your bold moves Sophie!
She wore a custom black and white Vionnet dress with a think black band belt around her waist and leather tights. She's getting the best of both worlds by wearing a mutant dress a.k.a. pant dress.
Since the dress is custom and is unavailable for purchase, you can check out Shopbop for other gorgeous dresses by Vionnet!

Hair I go: Russian TV personality Elena Lenina insured that all eyes were on her with her oversized hairdo
Glare alert! Juliette Lewis does everything possible to look incongruous by sporting a neon yellow trouser-suit, teamed with strappy heels as she leaves the Marriott Hotel in Cannes with a male friend
This year's festival, which opened on Wednesday and runs until May 23rd, saw a carousel of the weird and the wacky exhibited on the hallow steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès on the French town's sea front.
Among the dubious fashion trends that the A-listers seem to have sported this year are drapes with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini leading the way. Bursts of leather also appeared, in spite of the warm climate, with French actress Sophie Marceau easily the worst offender. The homegrown star wore leather trousers under a floaty black-and-white half skirt.
Sienna Miller flew in and almost took off in her kite dress. Her famously bohemian dress sense showcased in an interesting kite design that captured the attention of photographer's on the red carpet.
Salma Hayak treated us to print overkill in a pussy-bow dress that showcased as myriad of patterns in a dizzying combination of animal and floral prints.
Juliette Lewis stepped into the limelight, almost literally, wearing a neon yellow/lime trouser-suit, teamed with strappy heels while parents Robbie Wiliams and wife Ayda Field shrugged off the sexual harassment claims that dogged them last week to pose happily.
Robbie's look was less about his outfit and more about his hair, a Tintin-esque peroxide blonde quiff atop his head.
Metallic model: Lindsay Ellingson wore a space-age metallic cocktail dress that did well at cinching her figure but was over-shone by a shimmery train that resembled a net curtain
Let's go fly a kite! Sienna Miller shows her bohemian dress sense has evolved but that floaty still wins for her; the star wore this interesting kite dress: Right, Natasha Poly goes for the all over Bacofoil look
Hey Blondie! Posing defiantly in the face of the sexual harassment claims that surfaced last week, a peroxide-haired Robbie Williams and wife Ayda Field arrive at 'The Sea of Trees' premiere. Ayda was definitely not worried about side-boob exposure
Fellow British popstar Cheryl Fernandez-Versini shunned her usual admirable fashion sense as she jetted into nearby Nice airport wearing an ill-fitting yellow and white dress with miss-matched leather thigh-high boots and stiletto heels.
Sunglasses are essential in the South of France's bright sunshine and the former X Factor star and husband Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini both wore a pair,Cheryl opting for a an unusual Sixties pair over her signature aviators.
The typically style-conscious star then surprised us further when she opted for a fussy beige satin frock complete with drapes on the shoulders, a thick collar and a train that ran behind it, which did nothing to flatter the singer's flawless figure while dulling her enviable tan.
I've got my eyes on you! Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and husband Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini jetted into Cannes on Thursday with Cheryl sporting retro sunglasses that are a far cry from her usual choice of aviators
Looking mellow in yellow: Cheryl's choice of a boxy dress looked ill-fitting while the thigh-high boots cut her legs off
Not your best: Cheryl aimed for super-glam in this lacy beige number...but were there too many drapes for it to be a real fashion hit?
Unflattering: Cheryl's high collared dress did little to flatter her figure and the beige colour dulled her enviable tan
Made the cut: Turkish actress Fahriye Evcen went for a similar draped look (left) while Spanish actress Rossy De Palma (right) chose a deeply unflattering silhouette
Less recognisable names were eager to make their presence known on the red-carpet opting for ostentatious and over-the-top gowns in order to leave an impression on the red carpet.
Israeli socialite and serial red carpet attendee Hofit Golan opted for her usual look-at-me ensembles. Her dress choice for the premiere of Carol was all singing and all dancing featuring velour panels, a sheer bodice, a sharp pencil skirt and not forgetting an explosive tulle train.
During the Irrational Man premiere Hofit grabbed our attention with a busy jumpsuit that wouldn't look out of place in a 70s nightclub.
Determined to out-do Hofit was Russian TV personality Elena Lenina who insured all eyes were on her with an oversized take on the classic Lady Gaga hairbow.
Sheer: Aishwarya Rai missed the mark with this busy Elie Saab number, which swamped her figure
Pattern overkill: Salma Hayek went OTT with a mix of animal and floral prints that left us feeling dizzy
Now you see it: Serial red-carpet attendee Hofit Golan's choice in outfits tend to be all singing and all dancing with very few adornments left off from this extravagant gown
Meanwhile, Russian model Natasha Poly left little to the imagination with her open-fronted ball gown at the premier of Carol. The full skirt displayed ample leg with a very obvious side split which also showcased a glittering body suit.
But Natasha was not the only runway regular to get it wrong. American model Lindsay Ellingson showcased a confused ball-gown at the premier of Carol. Lindsay wore a space-age metallic cocktail dress that did well at cinching her figure but was over-shone by a shimmery train that resembled a net curtain.
Perhaps the most shocking outfits displayed so far come from French musician Petite Meller who decided that less is more when it comes to Cannes styling.
The musician attended afterparties in little more than her underwear with her most modest outfit taking the form of a red playsuit complete with straw hat and Pipi Long-stocking braids and of course her signature pink cheeks.
Something missing? Model Natasha Poly left little to the imagination with her open-fronted ball gown
Show off: The full skirt displayed ample leg with a very obvious side split which also showcased a glittering body suit
Pippi Long-stocking is that you? Musician Petite Miller's sunhat and playsuit might have been better suited for the beach than the film festival, pictured here with a guest at an after party for the Cannes Film Festival
Shoe swap! Petite stayed true to her barely there style while borrowing shoes from her friend she is pictured with in the photo above
Far from subtle: Victoria Silvstedt went slightly overboard with the lace theme - and the feathery trail didn't help either
