'You can't worry about your career when it comes to family': Carey Mulligan is happy to put Hollywood on hold for sake of children with husband Marcus Mumford

With a hugely successful stage and screen career under her belt Carey Mulligan freely admits she’s in a ‘privileged position’ should she wish to take time off and start a family.

But while it might be some time before she has children, the actress insists that even a lack of financial security wouldn't prevent her fulfilling her maternal instincts.

Referring to the prospect of building a family with musician husband Marcus Mumford, she told the Daily Mirror: 'Yeah, definitely. But I don't think you can ever be worried about your career when it comes to stuff like that. You've got to have some perspective.'

Carey was speaking as she continues to win critical praise for her role as schoolteacher Kyra Hollis in a Broadway production of David Hare play Skylight, in which she stars alongside fellow Brit Bill Nighy.

However her success has done little to alleviate a lack of confidence that is rarely, if ever, detected by fans of the 29-year-old actress.

'I get incredibly nervous in front of the cameras and have to try really hard not to get distracted by them,' she said.

'I try very hard to focus on the actor and or the scene and what I am doing, and try not to notice the big black box looming in my face.'

Baby-faced Carey, whose previous film credits include Shame, Drive and The Great Gatsby, is currently preparing  to celebrate her 30th birthday on  May 28, and she admits that getting older has its advantages.

She said: 'My agent has started saying, "You've been offered this part, she's 19, you're too old," and I'm like, "I'm too old? Brilliant! I've never been too old." All the great parts come now, I think, so I'm exited.'

The Oscar nominee has most recently been promoting her latest film Far From The Madding Crowd.

Carey plays the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene in the movie which is set in Victorian England.

She attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer; Frank Troy, a reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor.

The movie - in theatres now - also stars Juno Temple, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts, and a real-life ex of Carey's, Tom Sturridge.

She has also been nominated for a Tony Award for best actress in Skylight.

The winners will be announced on June 7.
