It's really off! Bristol Palin pictured in Alaska without her engagement ring after calling off wedding to Marine five days before ceremony amid 'secret wife' claims

  • Sarah Palin, former vice presidential candidate, said Monday that planned barbecue would still happen but the wedding is off
  • A friend of groom Dakota Meyer's former wife, Cassandra Wain, said recently the couple 'realized it was a mistake' to get married in 2008
  • She said in a Facebook post to Meyer that they had 'remained civil' and she didn't understand why he was trying to hide the marriage

For Bristol Palin and her now-former fiance Dakota Meyer, there may have been trouble brewing as far back as a week ago when she was first photographed without her massive engagement ring.

On Mother Day's, Ms Palin shared a selfie featuring her mother, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, behind the wheel of a car. In the photo, Bristol shows off her perfectly manicured left hand, but her impressive cushion-cut diamond engagement ring is tellingly absent.

Then on Saturday, just two days before it was revealed that Bristol and Dakota's wedding has been scrapped, the 24-year-old blushing bride shared another candid family snapshot in which her ring was nowhere to be seen.

Three weeks earlier, Bristol Palin proudly showed off her giant diamond bauble on social media, accompanied by the hashtag '#26days' and three hearts in an apparent reference to her upcoming nuptials.

On Monday, Bristol Palin's mother, the former Republican candidate for vice president, took to Facebook to announce that her daughter will not be marrying ex-US Marine Dakota Meyer this coming Saturday as previously planned.

News of the nixed nuptials comes just days after accusations emerged that 26-year-old Meyer had covered up a 'secret wife' he married at 19 and soon divorced.

The former vice presidential candidate did not give a reason for the cancellation. However, Mrs. Palin did say a celebration would still be held on May 23.

Palin wrote:

'[Bristol and Dakota] have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held,

'Many friends and family still look forward to getting together that day in Kentucky anyway – and the Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at 'the old Kentucky home' on May 23 to celebrate life, in general!'

However, Radar Online reports that Bristol has recently traveled back to Alaska as Dakota remains at his Kentucky home.

Along with her message, Sarah Palin posted the inspirational message, 'Trust in God's timing. It's better to wait a while and have things fall into place than to rush and have things fall apart.'

She also hinted at the 'secret wife' controversy by reposting her daughter's own response that called such reports 'salacious' and claimed 'Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement.'

Dakota Meyer put out his own statement on his Facebook page around the same time as Palin and bearing striking similarities to her message, suggesting a concerted public relations offensive on the part of the former governor and her would-be son-in-law.

A couple of days earlier, Sarah Palin spoke to Extra at a charity event about unspecified hurdles in Dakota and Bristol's relationship.

'She's very grounded, very practical in terms of making a lifelong commitment, she knows that hey, everything’s got to be worked out before you actually make that commitment,' Palin said at the time.

The reports emerged after a friend of Palin's husband-to-be's 'secret wife' attacked the former Marine, telling him to 'tell the truth' because the woman from his past 'doesn't deserve' to be part of his 'mess'.

Medal of Honor recipient Meyer married Cassandra Wain in Campbellsville, Kentucky, in May 2008, a marriage certificate in his name shows.

Her friend has come forward to say that the couple 'realized it was a mistake' to get married and they 'remained civil' after the breakup and were in contact as recently as October.

SARAH PALIN ANNOUNCES ON FACEBOOK THAT BRISTOL'S IS WEDDING OFF

Bristol and Dakota couldn’t be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding. They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held. Many friends and family still look forward to getting together that day in Kentucky anyway – and the Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at "the old Kentucky home" on May 23 to celebrate life, in general! Family members and close friends know they are welcome to share a great bar-b-que on the farm that day. All involved, especially Dakota, Bristol and Tripp, and their parents and grandparents, thank supporters for the love they've expressed.

And friends, please see Bristol's message clearing up rumors that tabloids salivate over:

'Regarding salacious headlines in recent days about “secret wives”, Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement. Dakota was legally divorced years ago, as any good reporter could and should have disclosed to readers. As usual, false stories and dramatically written headlines begging controversy should be disregarded, and we have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time by those with decency. Thank you! – Bristol'

'We never discredit you as a Marine, you were a great soldier. We took you in after you came back from the hospital in Ohio and wanted to be there for you,' she wrote in a Facebook comment on Meyer's profile.

She continued: 'What I'm not understanding is why this marriage to my best fiend is something you are trying to hide.

'You guys were young and infatuated with one another. You got married, then realized it was a mistake. No scandal, no abuse, no nothing. It was short lived and we thought you all remained civil.

'To read the bulls*** of people putting their two cents into this issue they know nothing about is hard to read.

Meyer, now 26, would have been just 19 when he wed Wain, who was two years his senior.

On the marriage certificate, he lists his occupation as 'marine', while Wain, who is from Michigan, worked as a records processor at the time, the certificates shows.

The couple legally divorced on March 3, 2010, according to Meyer's lawyer.

Other information about the marriage is sealed, reported RadarOnline, which was the first to share the document.

Bristol's rep told DailyMail.com that it was the first he had heard of the relationship and had not discussed the issue with his client.

Daily Mail Online is still awaiting a response from Meyer and his lawyer, regarding Wain's friend's Facebook comment. There have also been attempts to contact Wain and her friend.

Palin, 24, announced that she was engaged to Meyer in March on Instagram.

'Truly the luckiest girl in the world, cannot wait to marry this man,' Palin wrote next to photo of herself kissing Meyer and flashing a large ring.

She met Meyer last year when he flew from his home in Kentucky to Alaska to appear on Sarah Palin's Amazing America TV show.

Meyer, who served in the Marines for four years, was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama in 2011.

He was given the top award after repeatedly charging into a kill zone during a 2009 ambush in Kunar Province, Afghanistan in search of four of his missing comrades.

He was able to rescue 36 troops and kill eight Taliban attackers despite being shot in the arms. He was not able to save his four fellow Marines, but went back and carried their bodies out.

Following the engagement, he also shared his excitement on social media, saying: 'I'm definitely the luckiest guy ever to be able to spend the rest of my life with [Bristol].'

The couple have both been counting down the days until their wedding.

'I just want to wish the best mother I know a Happy Mothers Day!' he wrote last weekend. 'Thank you for being the amazing woman that you are! #futurewife #13days.'

Palin has a six-year-old son, Tripp, with former fiancé Levi Johnson. She gave birth to the little boy when she was just 17 and she and Johnson ultimately broke up in 2009.

Since her mother's failed bid to become vice president in 2008, Bristol has appeared on Dancing with the Stars and featured in her own Lifetime show with her son, 'Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp'.

She also released a best-selling memoir in 2011, Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far.
