What Is YouTube?

YouTube is a video-sharing site created for uploading and sharing videos. These videos can be viewed worldwide by accessing YouTube.com.

Overview

Prior to YouTube, there were few ways for mainstream users to share videos on the Internet. YouTube launched to the public in November 2005. By July 2006, over 65,000 videos were being uploaded to YouTube per day, and its videos were receiving 100 million views per day. The success of the Internet start-up quickly caught the attention of Google. Only one year after going public, YouTube was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in November 2006.

While anyone can watch videos on YouTube, uploading a video requires a YouTube account. Setting up an account requires the user to provide YouTube with a username, birth date, zip code, and e-mail address.

YouTube users upload the equivalent of 60 hours of video to the YouTube servers each minute. Over four billion videos per day are watched worldwide, and over 800 million people visit YouTube every month. The viewer ratio of males to females is 50:50. Fifty percent of YouTube users visit the site at least once a week, and 50 percent of users share videos with friends and family on a regular basis.
