Fuming Kanye West says he was 'grossly over-censored' at the Billboard Music Awards and apologises to fans saying 'unwarranted muting' ruined performance

Kanye West says it's not his fault his fans watching on TV couldn't enjoy his performance at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.

In a statement released Tuesday, the rapper, 37, laid the blame squarely at the door of ABC - the network which aired the show.

'Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards,' the statement released by his publicist said. 'Non-profane lyrics such as ‘with my leather black jeans on’ were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented.'

He also apologized to fans for the way TV executives cut the audio throughout his on-stage appearance in Las Vegas, claiming the amount of muting of his lyrics was 'unwarranted.'

The statement appeared on his Instagram page along with a link to where fans could watch his Billboard performance uncensored.

'It is ridiculous that in 2015, unwarranted censorship is something that artists still have to fight against,' the statement continued. 'Although West was clearly set up to face elements beyond his control during the live broadcast, he would like to apologize to the television audience who were unable to enjoy the performance the way he envisioned.'

The remarks follow a huge backlash on social media from angry fans following the awards show broadcast on ABC.

ABC and Dick Clark Productions have so far made no comment.

The rapper closed the awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the Strip with a set that included his tracks All Day and Black Skinhead.

However, almost a minute of it was silenced by the TV network.

Many fans also pointed out afterwards that Kanye, 37, could barely be seen on stage due to the large amount of pyrotechnics.

Kanye had been advertised as one of the main performers of Sunday's Billboards and many fans had been sat through the two-hour awards show waiting for their idol.

But when he did finally appear, he sang so many explicit lyrics that a lot of his performance was silenced.

Twitter user Chelsea Smyrski ‏wrote: 'I'm glad everyone at the Billboards is enjoying Kanye's performance. I wouldn't know cuz it's not like I can hear it'

According to Billboard and NME, West was booed by the crowd near the end of his performance, possibly due to the amount of pyrotechnics making it difficult for both the crowd in the arena and fans at home to see his performance at times.
