A retired David Letterman lets loose as he hits afterparty following the taping of his final show

The normally suited and booted David Letterman let loose Wednesday night as he headed out following the taping of his final show.

The 68-year-old donned a Foo Fighters tee along with stripped trousers and a cream-colored suit jacket as he headed to the Museum of Modern Art from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

He and his staff, along with friends of the show, gathered at the venue to celebrate the over 6,000 episodes of the popular late night program coming to a close.

And though Letterman may have been the most sought after man in all of New York last night by both fans and the paparazzi, the host somehow managed to evade them all as he ducked out after the show.

CBS reported that he had a decoy limousine waiting outside the building to throw people off and actually exited through Angelo’s Pizza, located at the base of his building, before just walking the few blocks from the studio to MOMA for the afterparty.

One there however, the host 'only stayed for a bit' according to one reporter

Little else has been reported about the afterparty, which was easily the biggest ticket in town Wednesday night and one of the most star-studded events of the year.

Photos have emerged of Tina Fey, Steve Martin and members of the Foo Fighters at the party, all guests on the final show, but it is not known who else was on hand to say farewell to Letterman.

Earlier that day The Late Show's official Twitter feed shared an image of Letterman taking the stage for the final time just hours before air-time.

Other VIPs attending the last show included Jerry Seinfeld and his wife Jessica, who shared a picture of themselves heading to the recording before posing for the cameras outside the studios.

'Late.... to a very important date,' Jessica, 43, posted on Instagram along a photo of herself and her 61-year-old actor husband, who had pulled on a tuxedo for the occasion.

Letterman, famed for his quick wit, sarcasm, offbeat humor, attitude and crazy stunts, hosted Hollywood stars and U.S. presidents in his final weeks of the show before handing the reins to comedian Stephen Colbert.

George Clooney appeared with handcuffs to ensure Letterman would not leave. Comedian Tina Fey stripped off her dress to reveal underwear saying 'Bye Dave' and President Barack Obama joked about retirement plans.

Actor Bill Murray, Letterman's first guest on the show, made a final appearance along with singer Bob Dylan on Tuesday night.

From his start on NBC's Late Night in February 1982, Letterman's comedy was about more than telling jokes. He attached a camera to a monkey's back, tossed watermelons off a roof and wore a suit of Alka-Seltzer to plunge into a tank of water.

Celebrities used to being fawned over either clicked with his prickly personality or didn't, and when Cher called him a more profane version of jerk, it became a memorable moment.

He shifted to CBS in 1993 when NBC gave the Tonight show to Jay Leno instead of Letterman, a slight he never forgot or forgave.

The tricks subsided as Letterman mellowed with age and fatherhood. His audience welcomed him back after a heart bypass, listened as he became the first late-night host back on the air after the 2001 terrorist attacks and saw him acknowledge to inappropriately having sex with a subordinate.

As retirement neared, Letterman joked about second thoughts. 'Next week I'll be Googling foods that improve prostate health,' the veteran host said on Tuesday.

He also opened his heart: ending a segment with Oprah Winfrey last week, the microphone picked him up saying 'I love you' as the two hugged. He shared a lingering last kiss onstage with Julia Roberts.
