When it comes to Sienna Miller's relationship, it's on again, off again – at least as far as her engagement ring is concerned.

The actress was spotted with – and without – the ring at public appearances during the Cannes Film Festival last week, prompting speculation about her future with fiance Tom Sturridge.

Friends have also said they have witnessed the couple involved in 'blazing rows', further fuelling rumours about the state of their three-year engagement. 

Miller, 33, wore the ring when she arrived for a screening last Saturday.

But the next day she was seen without it on the red carpet, and was again ringless when she went for a stroll down La Croissette with Marlowe, her 22-month-old daughter with Sturridge, on Monday.

To add to the confusion she donned the ring again on Thursday night when she attended the glamorous amfAR Gala. 

A close source to the actress refused to deny the engagement was off, but added that the absence of the ring was not a reflection on Sienna's personal life but simply reflected the fact that it was not always an 'appropriate' piece of jewellery for her outfits.

Fellow actor Sturridge, who counts Robert Pattinson among his closest friends, has kept his distance from the film festival, where Sienna is a jury member.

A second source added: 'Sienna and Tom are in very different stages of their lives, despite sharing so much together. There are rows about money too, Sienna has a lot of personal wealth and he doesn't.

'They are both from well-off families but paying for mortgages and things does come up.' Sienna's previous engagement, to Jude Law, fell apart very publicly. She called it off in 2005 following the revelation that he had had an affair with his children's nanny Daisy Wright.

The pair got back together four years later but ultimately separated, with Sienna insisting it was an amicable split.

Speaking last year, the actress said of 27-year-old Sturridge 'He's the perfect balance to my lunacy, which makes him sounds really boring but he's not, at all. It's good, it works. It's not easy, of course, but we're a family and I love that. I wake up and I'm like, 'I'm a family, I'm a grown up!' I still can't believe that.'
