Hollywood star Carey Mulligan proved that she's pretty grounded this week when she celebrated her 30th birthday on a bike ride with her husband.

The A-lister, who reached the landmark age on Thursday, took a jaunt around New York City on rented bikes with Mumford & Sons' Marcus Mumford to celebrate that day.

Carey looked wholesome in a denim shirt dress and Birkenstock sandals, holding her hands with fellow Brit Marcus as they marked the milestone birthday with a down-to-earth day out in the US capital.

The Great Gatsby actress shrouded her waif-like shape with a billowing dress design and went almost unrecognised with her tresses tied into a low bun and shades on her nose.

Marcus meanwhile, sported his characteristic indie image in a double denim look with brown Chelsea boots.

And while she stepped out unhindered by bags, he toted their day out belongings and stowed it in the front basket of the rented bike.

Carey has been a prominent figure in Hollywood since her breakthrough role in 2009's An Education, but now says she's in a 'privileged position' where she can take time off work to build a family.

During a recent interview with The Mirror, the English actress - who's currently enjoying a high profile stint on Broadway - confirmed that she hopes for children with husband of three years Marcus.

She said: 'I don't think you can ever be worried about your career when it comes to stuff like that. You've got to have some perspective.'

Carey Mulligan: A TRUE New Yorker

Mulligan and Mumford were childhood pen pals who reportedly reconnected through moviestar and mutual friend Jake Gyllenhaal.

Her first movie role came 10 years ago with a memorable role in Pride & Prejudice, though Carey says that she's excited about the next period in her acting career.

'I spent a lot of my early 20s playing teenagers because of my baby face,' she continued in the recent interview.

'My agent has started saying, "You've been offered this part, she's 19, you're too old", and I'm like, "I'm too old? Brilliant! I've never been too old". All the great parts come now, I think, so I'm excited.'
