They are known to be good friends and have previously batted down dating rumours.

And now Ed Sheeran has revealed why he never tried to pursue a romantic relationship with Taylor Swift.

The 24-year-old singer recently joined radio show The Breakfast Club for an interview and spilled the beans on why their friendship never blossomed into something more.

When asked by host Charlamagne Tha God on whether or not they've ever hooked up, the I See Fire hitmaker replied: 'I met her professionally first. We were writing songs and then I don't know, I just get on really well with her.'

Charlamagne even attempted to loosen Ed up with some liquid courage as he opened up a bottle of alcohol and offered the British singer some.

 'She's not your type?,' co-host Angela Yee queried to which Ed replied: 'Too tall.'

The Thinking Out Loud singer continued: 'I don't know man, I feel like we look like castmembers of The Hobbit.

 'She's like in the elven kingdom, she's like you know hanging out with Galadriel and I've got hairy feet.'

Taylor, 25, is currently in a relationship with EDM DJ Calvin Harris.

And on Thursday, Ed proved that he and the Bad Blood hitmaker and he are good friends as he tagged along with the couple on a lunch date to English pub The Spotted Pig in the West Village neighbourhood of New York on Thursday.

Taylor and Calvin were first linked after the BRIT Awards in February, and they slowly went public with their relationship in the following few weeks.

Ed has been quite complimentary of 31-year-old Calvin as earlier this month he had nothing but praise for the Bounce hit maker as he talked to ZM Online backstage at his show in Auckland, New Zealand.

'He’s a really nice guy. Really, really nice guy,' he said, adding: 'There are certain people that are just nice people in the industry.'

'I met him maybe a year ago,' he continued, once again adding that Taylor's new man was a 'really, really good guy.'

Ed has kept himself quite busy as he performed during the Good Morning America Concert Series in New York City on Friday morning.
