This is the adorable moment a pet dog was safely brought back to dry land after being rescued by a lifeboat crew when its owner's 15ft boat capsized in choppy seas.

The shaggy dog, called Leo, and its owner found themselves struggling to keep afloat in the sea off Poole Harbour in Dorset after their boat ran into difficulty yesterday evening.

The pair were in a 15ft vessel sailing from Christchurch towards Poole when the boat began taking on water and eventually capsized under the weight of it.

An RNLI team from Poole spotted the sailor and his dog in difficulty and launched their Costello lifeboat.

The crew rescued the pair and took them to Brownsea Island in the harbour for a check over before sailing them back to the mainland, towing the capsized boat behind them.

Both the sailor and Leo the dog were uninjured.

Volunteer helmsman Ed Davies said: 'Conditions in the harbour were choppy, the wind was north-westerly force 5 and the vessel got caught out.

'They were only in the water briefly as they were lucky that another vessel was nearby to pick them up and we were pleased to save his boat.'

The rescue came as forecasters warned of wet and windy conditions across the UK for the next 36 hours.

Forecasters predict gale-force winds and heavy rain will lash the country from lunchtime today until Wednesday, when a 'significant change' in conditions will bring sunshine and warmer weather.

Britain is then set to bask in glorious sunshine towards the end of the week, with temperatures soaring up to 23C in most parts.
