Judges at the International Wine Challenge awarded Aldi with two gold, seven silver and 16 bronze medals. Its wines were also highly commended 18 times.

Last month, the supermarket also won seven top international awards for its spirits and liqueurs - trumping drinks which were six times more expensive.

Aldi's range of gin, vodka and liqueurs, with an average price of just £8, won five silver medals, as well as two bronze, at the International Spirits Challenge.

Among the winning drinks, Aldi's Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin (£9.99) picked up a silver medal, while Beefeater Burrough's Reserve Gin which sells for a staggering £62.95 was given a bronze in its category.
