Sofia Coppola walks away from directing live-action version of classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid over 'creative differences'
Sofia Coppola has dropped plans to direct a live-action version of the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid.
The 44-year-old director left the Universal Pictures and Working Title Films project over 'creative differences,' according to an article on Monday by Deadline.
It was announced in March 2014 that Coppola was set to direct a live version of the 1837 fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
Creative differences: Sofia Coppola, shown last month in New York City, has dropped out as director of the live-action film version of The Little Mermaid
The project was still moving forward despite her departure with a rewritten script by Caroline Thompson about the mermaid willing to make a Faustian bargain to live on land after falling in love.
Thompson, 59, wrote the screenplay for the 1993 British fantasy film The Secret Garden based on the 1911 English children's book.
She also penned the scripts for the Tim Burton films Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
Disney version: The Little Mermaid is shown in a still from the 1989 animated version of the classic fairy tale
Details on the new version of The Little Mermaid have yet to emerge, but it could be darker than the 1989 animated Disney version of the film.
Andersen's original tale found the titular mermaid bargaining with the villainous Sea Witch who cuts off her tongue in exchange for giving her human legs.
The Little Mermaid has become one of Andersen's most enduring fairy tales along with The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes and The Snow Queen, which Disney adapted into the 2013 blockbuster Frozen.
Landmark statue: The Little Mermaid is shown in 2014 as a statue that has become a tourist attraction in Copenhagen, Denmark
Coppola, the daughter of famed Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola, directed the 2013 crime satire The Bling Ring starring Emma Watson and based on real-life events.
The New York City native recently finished directing the Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas with comedian Bill Murray and a cast of stars due out in December.
Coppola made her feature film directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides in 1999 and also directed Murray and Scarlett Johansson in the critically acclaimed 2003 comedy-drama Lost In Translation.
