Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Nicholas Brendon checks into rehab to deal with depression and substance-abuse problems after arrests

Former Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has checked into rehab.

The 44-year-old actor's actions came two weeks after his fourth arrest in recent months on intoxication-related charges.

A statement posted to Nicholas' Facebook page on Monday shared the news that the actor would be at a California rehab centre 'to treat his depression, alcoholism, and substance abuse problems.'

'He has been aware of his problems for some time,' the statement continued.

'With each new challenge, he gained a greater understanding of what needed to be done to overcome these obstacles and move forward with his life.'

As a result of his time at rehab, the Facebook post informed fans that Nicholas would not be attending any conventions until at least August.

Best known for playing the goofy and loyal Xander Harris in all seven seasons of Buffy, Nicholas has been a mainstay of fan conventions in recent years.

It has been at those conventions, however, that many of the actor's legal problems have occurred.

After four arrests in four cities since October 2014, rehab might have been the best option for Nicholas.

Although troubled by his psychological and addiction issues for years - Nicholas previously entered rehab in 2004 and 2010 - additional stresses may have brought on the recent breakdown.

Nicholas separated from his wife of less than one year, Moonda Tee, on this year's Valentine's Day and was arrested just two days later in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after he trashed a hotel room and refused to pay for his stay.

A few months earlier, in October, Nicholas faced arrest in Idaho for intoxication and property destruction.

This pattern continued in March - with another trashed hotel room in Florida - and again in May - for public intoxication in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

While Facebook reported that Nicholas tried less comprehensive treatment options to deal with his issues, he 'needed to take an extended break and treat the underlying issues of his illness.'

After Buffy ended in 2003, Nicholas starred in several TV series that had limited success - most notably Kitchen Confidential, starring the then up-and-coming Bradley Cooper.

He eventually landed in the recurring role of Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds in 2007.

Nicholas also had a major arc on Private Practice in 2010 and 2011, playing a mentally disturbed man who assaulted one of the show's main doctors, Charlotte King.
