Bruce Jenner has been unveiled as a woman on the cover of Vanity Fair.

The 65-year-old former decathlete is wearing a silky white basque, which reveal the results of Jenner's recent 36D breast implant surgery.

It also reveals Jenner's new name for the first time - Caitlyn. (She is understood to have avoided spelling the name with a 'K' in an effort to create an identity separate to the Kardashian clan).

The reality TV star also set up a verified Twitter account under Caitlyn Jenner - quickly amassing more than 1 million followers - where she shared her cover and wrote: 'I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self.

'Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me.'

During the Vanity Fair interview, Jenner revealed she had a panic attack at one point during the transition.

'"What did I just do? What did I just do to myself?'" Caitlyn told author Buzz Bissinger she was left wondering, after waking up from a 10-hour facial feminization surgery on March 15, worried she had gone too far.

But after calling a counselor from the Los Angeles Gender Center, who made a house call to Jenner's Malibu home, she realized the doubt and second-guessing was 'human and temporary'.

In fact, she said that shooting the cover was better than winning the Olympics.

'That was a good day, but the last couple of days were better,' Caitlyn told the magazine.

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the cover at Caitlyn's palatial Malibu home. Leibovitz is one of the most renowned celebrity photographers, having shot many classic covers for Vanity Fair, including Demi Moore posing naked when pregnant.

Inside the magazine, Caitlyn is pictured wearing five more outfits and in an accompanying YouTube video, which shows the shoot taking place, Jenner talks about her relief at having no secrets anymore.

Expanding on her feelings about doing the Vanity Fair cover, Caitlyn continued: 'The last few days of doing this shoot was about my life and who I am as a person.

'It's not about the fanfare, it's not about the people cheering in the stadium, its not about going down the street getting an ''Atta boy Bruce' pat on the back, okay, this is about your life.

'Soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I'm free.'

That being said, Caitlyn admitted that she is still having a little trouble when it comes to her new pronoun, and for that reason does not immediately get offended when others get it wrong.

'I don't really get hung up,' she said.

'A guy came in the other day and I was fully dressed - it's just habit, I said, "Hi, Bruce here," and I went, "Oh fu*k, it ain't Bruce," I was screwing up doing it.''

Caityln also opened up about introducing her female identity to eldest daughter Cassandra (also known as Casey).

'I was worried I wouldn't say the right things or act the right way or seem relaxed,' Caitlyn told Bissinger. But then Cassandra realized her father's happiness as Caitlyn and was at ease.

'We talked more than we ever have. We could just be girls together.'

His son Burt - who along with Cassandra is from his first marriage to Chrystie Scott, touched on Bruce being an absent father, but said: 'I have high hopes that Caitlyn is a better person than Bruce. I’m very much looking forward to that.'

Brandon and Brody - whose girlfriend coincidentally called Kaitlynn (Carter) - also spoke to Vanity Fair (they are his sons from his second marriage, to Linda Thompson).

Their contribution reveals that Brandon was somewhat taken aback when he saw Caitlyn for the first time, and that she revealed the results of her breast implant surgery to him.

'Whoa, I’m still your son,' he reminded her.

Caitlyn also took time to address those who have said they think this all a publicity stuff, and a way to make more money.

'''Oh, she's doing a stupid reality show. She's doing it for the money. She's doing this, she's doing that,''' said Caitlyn of her detractors objections.

'I'm not doing it for money. I'm doing it to help my soul and help other people.

'If I can make a dollar, I certainly am not stupid. [I have] house payments and all that kind of stuff. I will never make an excuse for something like that. Yeah, this is a business. You don't go out and change your gender for a television show. O.K., it ain't happening. I don't care who you are.'

In true competitive Kardashian fashion, the explosive Vanity Fair cover was released less than 24 hours after his stepdaughter Kim Kardashian revealed her second pregnancy at the end of Sunday's episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Its release also follows Jenner's recent tell-all interview to ABC's Diane Sawyer, where the KUWTK reality star confirmed rife speculation about her gender reassignment.

'SHE WASN'T VERY NICE': CAITLYN SLAMS EX-WIFE KRIS JENNER

Elsewhere in the interview, Caitlyn had a few choice words to say about ex-wife Kris - and she also gets a right of reply.

The couple were married in 1991 - which was Bruce's third marriage and Kris' second - before their divorce was finalized in March.

Speaking of their relationship, Caitlyn said: 'The first 15 years I felt she needed me more because I was the breadwinner. Then really around the show, when that hit and she was running the whole show and getting credit for it and she had her own money, she didn’t need me as much from that standpoint. I think in a lot of ways she became less tolerant of me.'

Caitlyn went on: 'A lot of times she wasn’t very nice.People would see how I got mistreated. She controlled the money, all that kind of stuff.'

In response, Kris told Vanity Fair: 'He was married to me and he wasn’t who he wanted to be so he was miserable... All I was doing was working very hard for my family so that we could all have a wonderful future, and he was pissed off.'

She added: 'At the end of my relationship with Bruce he definitely had a lot of social anxiety. That was one of the reasons we were in a struggle at the end.'

Tension between the couple previously played out on a recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, where the pair discussed the up and downs in their marriage.

In the episode a tearful Kris said she was mourning 'the death' of Bruce as she came to terms with his new identity.

HOW CAITLYN WAS INSPIRED BY MONICA LEWINSKY

Caitlyn Jenner was moved by Monica Lewinsky's Ted Talk on cyber-bullying...and the feeling is mutual

Three months ago, Monica Lewinsky's Ted Talk on cyber-bullying truly touched Caitlyn Jenner, whose gender affirmation journey has received a hefty share of haters.

The former White House intern's 'culture humiliation' happened after her nine sexual encounters with President Bill Clinton between 1995-1997 erupted into a national debacle.

'The talk had struck a chord with Caitlyn,' Vanity Fair's Buzz Bissinger wrote in the July edition, 'because of the similarities with how she had been dealt with on the Internet.'

Upon reading the article, Lewinsky - who turns 42 next month - tweeted at the 65-year-old Olympic gold medalist.

'And i am moved by @Caitlyn_Jenner being moved!' Monica tweeted to her 93K followers.

'Insisting on a different ending to her story is EXACTLY what @Caitlyn_Jenner is doing. she is helping so many. BRAVA! @VanityFair.'

The social activist's speech - called 'The Price of Shame' - has amassed 4.3M views since March.

CAITLYN TO MAKE RED CARPET DEBUT AT ESPYs

ESPN confirmed on Monday over Twitter that Caitlyn Jenner will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs, happening July 15 in Los Angeles.

It will be the first major public appearance for the 65-year-old decathlete, who became famous for winning gold medals at both the 1975 and 1976 Olympic Games.

But as the reality star explained in the Vanity Fair cover story, it took true courage for Jenner to make her gender affirmation and physical transformation.

'It's not about the fanfare, it's not about people cheering in the stadium, it's not about going down the street and everybody giving you, "That a boy, Bruce," pat on the back. Okay, this is about your life,' the 6ft2in brunette - born William - told the mag.

Caitlyn will reportedly be joined by her family onstage the Nokia Theatre during the sporty ceremony hosted by Joel McHale.

Previous courageous recipients of the honour include Howard Cosell, Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, and Robin Roberts.

Annie Leibovitz has captured the glamorous Caitlyn in all her glory in the glossy Vanity Fair shoot.

The 65-year-old reality star is seen in six different outfits in the photoshoot, including a plunging gold gown, split to the thigh and a sexy red dress while sat inside a car.

She also styles out several black ensembles; in one photo Caitlyn lounges on a sofa revealing her long legs in a deep V-neckline design

In another she is seen in a black lace corset complete with train and another shows her in a full-length $7,000 black gown designed by Zac Posen, who told Dailymail.com he was 'very proud to be included in the roster of chosen designers for such a historic moment'.

During the off-times in the shoot, as seen in the video, Caitlyn covers her body in a satin silk robe while getting her hair and makeup primped and touched up by the glam squad.

'The last few days of doing this shoot was about my life and who I am as a person,' she said in the voiceover audio.

'I was probably at the [Olympic] Games because I was running away from a lot of things. Uh, very very proud of the accomplishments.'

Adding: 'I don't want to diminish that accomplishment.'

'Soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I'm free,' Caitlyn, who appears on the cover in a white basque from West Hollywood shop Trashy Lingerie, confessed.

'It's not about the fanfare, it's not about the people cheering in the stadium, its not about going down the street getting a 'Atta boy Bruce' pat on the back, okay, this is about your life.

'Bruce always had to tell a lie, he was always living that lie, every day he always had a secret from morning until night, um, Caitlyn doesn't have any secrets.'

Of course the subject of Jenner's new-look has been highly anticipated, and was expected to be revealed on a forthcoming E! reality show.

Recently, the network has shown scenes of Bruce showing his step daughter Kim Kardashian his female wardrobe.

Jenner also showed his closet to Sawyer during their explosive interview which aired in April.

And on Sunday's episode of KUWTK, Jenner gave a tour of his new Malibu home, which included more footage of his closet.
