Betsey Johnson, 72, cartwheels onto the stage and then does the splits as she's honoured at the CFDA Fashion Awards
Apparently she ends her fashion shows by doing cartwheels on the catwalk.
So it made absolute sense for flamboyant designer Betsey Johnson, 72, to cartwheel her way onto the stage at the CFDA Fashion Awards at New York's Lincoln Center on Monday evening.
And, if that was't enough, she ended her athletic display by doing the splits - just as she had done on the red carpet.
How does she do it?: Flamboyant designer Betsey Johnson, 72, cartwheeled onto the stage at the CFDA Fashion Awards at New York's Lincoln Center on Monday evening
Quite an act: She ended her athletic display by doing the splits - just as she had done earlier on the red carpet
However, acknowledging her age, she asked her pal, presenter Kelly Osbourne, to help her get up off the floor so she could give her acceptance speech for the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.
The honour recognised her more than 50 years as a designer of colourful and whimsical clothing.
But Betsey's career wasn't always smooth sailing. She bounced back after her eponymous brand was forced into bankruptcy in 2012 and is now a fashion force online.
Blonde bombshell: The veteran designer was honoured with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising her more than 50 years as a designer
She can do it anywhere: Betsey's 40-year-old daughter Lulu Johnson, in pink, couldn't help smiling as her mother did the splits on the red carpet
The amazingly fit blonde, who looked years younger than 72, wore a black-and-white striped romper suit, white leather booties and a brown leather belt.
She accessorised with a heavy, blingy necklace that flopped into her face during her cartwheel.
Her bleach blonde hair was precision cut into a bob and she added a few streaks of dark brown to her fringe and yellow and pink to the front tresses.
Hugging it out: Kelly Osbourne, in a striking red sequin two piece, presented the ebulliant Betsey with her award and the pair cuddled back stage
Classic black: Actresses and designers twins Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen got the evening's top award for womenswear for their high-end, minimalist label The Row
Betsey red carpet antics were watched by fellow designer Lulu Johnson, 40, in a pink gown and one of Lulu's two daughters, who wore a white dress with layers of white netting frills.
The evening's top design awards went to sisters Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for womenswear for their high-end, minimalist label The Row, and to Tom Ford for menswear.
Kim Kardashian presented the Media Award to Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, who repaid the favor by calling her 'the Queen of Instagram' in his speech
Very different styles: Kanye West opted for a black shirt and trousers as he presented Pharrell Williams, in a blue leather jacket and jeans, with the Fashion Icon Award
Red carpet couple: Both Kanye and wife Kim Kardashian were presenters at the event with Kim giving the Media Award to Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom
The Fashion Icon Award went to Pharrell Williams, whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage.
However, the music star wasn't sure about the 'Icon' designation, ending his acceptance speech by saying: 'I'm not a style icon. I'm just inspired. And I'm OK with that.'
The Council Of Fashion Designers Of America holds its annual event to recognize the outstanding contributions made to American fashion by individuals from the industry and related arts.
Awards are handed out for design excellence in womenswear, menswear and accessories as well as extraordinary accomplishments in journalism, creative vision and lifetime achievement.
At the podium: Tom Ford nabbed the award for menswear while Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, who took the media honour, called his presenter Kim 'the Queen of Instagram' in his speech
