Betsey Johnson, 72, cartwheels onto the stage and then does the splits as she's honoured at the CFDA Fashion Awards

Apparently she ends her fashion shows by doing cartwheels on the catwalk.

So it made absolute sense for flamboyant designer Betsey Johnson, 72, to cartwheel her way onto the stage at the CFDA Fashion Awards at New York's Lincoln Center on Monday evening.

And, if that was't enough, she ended her athletic display by doing the splits - just as she had done on the red carpet.

However, acknowledging her age, she asked her pal, presenter Kelly Osbourne, to help her get up off the floor so she could give her acceptance speech for the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honour recognised her more than 50 years as a designer of colourful and whimsical clothing.

But Betsey's career wasn't always smooth sailing. She bounced back after her eponymous brand was forced into bankruptcy in 2012 and is now a fashion force online.

The amazingly fit blonde, who looked years younger than 72, wore a black-and-white striped romper suit, white leather booties and a brown leather belt.

She accessorised with a heavy, blingy necklace that flopped into her face during her cartwheel.

Her bleach blonde hair was precision cut into a bob and she added a few streaks of dark brown to her fringe and yellow and pink to the front tresses.

The Fashion Icon Award went to Pharrell Williams, whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage.

However, the music star wasn't sure about the 'Icon' designation, ending his acceptance speech by saying: 'I'm not a style icon. I'm just inspired. And I'm OK with that.'
