Something wrong? Prince Philip grimaces as he joins Anne, Albert of Monaco and Pavlos of Greece for fleet review in Cowes

  • Prince Philip was conducting a review of the Royal Yacht Squadron
  • Watched a flotilla of 180 yachts process past along the Solent
  • Was joined by Princess Anne, Prince Michael of Kent and Prince Albert
  • Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and wife Marie-Chantal also there

Prince Philip allowed himself a wry grimace today, as he conducted a fleet review in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Watching the flotilla of more than 180 yachts process along the Solent, the 93-year-old Duke was on fine form but couldn't resist a smirk part way through.

Philip was joined by a veritable who's who of royalty for the occasion, among them his daughter Princess Anne, 64, and Albert II of Monaco, 57.

Also watching the fleet review, which was held to mark the bicentenary of the Royal Yacht Squadron, was Prince Michael of Kent who was dapper in a navy blazer.

Other royals to make the journey to Cowes included Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, 48, and his British wife Marie-Chantal, 46.

Pavlos, although unlikely to ever take his seat on the now defunct throne of Greece, is the son of Prince Philip's cousin Constantine II who ruled the Mediterranean nation until 1973.

Philip is himself a prince of both Greece and Denmark and is a member of the House of Glücksburg, which has ruled the Scandinavian country since 1863 and Christian IX.

The Duke, who became a naturalised British citizen after marrying the Queen in 1947, is no stranger to things marine, having served in the Royal Navy between 1939 and 1951.

Currently Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Philip also holds a number of other naval commissions, among them Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy.

Cousin Pavlos is also a sailing expert, albeit of the yacht variety, and is part of the crew manning Mari-Cha IV - a craft that crossed the Atlantic in a record time of six days, 17 hours and 52 minutes in 2003.

The Royal Yacht Squadron was founded originally as The Yacht Club in June 1815 by 42 gentlemen interested in yachting who agreed to meet in London and Cowes twice a year.

Early members included George IV, who joined while Prince Regent in 1817, and gave it its current name in 1833.

The Royal Yacht Squadron, whose patron is the Queen, began to arrange racing and remains one of the most pre-eminent yacht clubs in the world, with its clubhouse located in Cowes Castle.
