The son of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen has been arrested for domestic violence after allegedly attacking his girlfriend while drunk and high on nitrous oxide.

John Bowlen was taken into custody in Colorado wearing a t-shirt from the NFL franchise on Wednesday after his distressed partner of 10 months called the police because of his 'erratic behavior'.

After the woman dialed 911, the 29-year-old shoved her against the bathroom wall of his luxury apartment in Glendale and then hung up the connection.

When the operator called back, Bowlen reportedly said: 'This is the owner of the Denver Broncos. I am sorry. K [sic]. Nothing is wrong. This is John Bowlen.'

According to the police report, seen by TMZ, he was under the influence of alcohol and Whippets.

Whippets is slang for nitrous oxide - which is more commonly known as laughing gas.

Bowlen was set to take over ownership of the team after his father, who suffers from Alzheimers, revealed he would be relinquishing his duties in July.

The plan was to divide the franchise among his seven children, but son John has now been put on a leave of absence. He was working as

A spokesman for the Broncos told the Denver Post: 'We are disappointed to learn of the matter involving John Bowlen, who is a son of owner Pat Bowlen and an administrative employee with the organization.

'While this is a personal issue, he is accountable to all club and league conduct policies. As such, John will be placed on an indefinite leave of absence from the organization.

He is being held without bail.

Bowlen's latest arrest comes after a number of run-ins with the law for drug possesion and being under the influence.

In 2003 he was accused in Glendale of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia, but those charges were dismissed by Arapahoe County prosecutors, the Post reported.

In August 2005, he was also arrested by Boulder police on suspicion of driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty to driving while his ability was impaired.

And Bowlen isn't the only son of a Broncos executive who has run into legal troubles recently.

In May, the son of General Manager John Elway, John III, was arrested and accused of assault against his then girlfriend.

However the charges were dropped in October when prosecutors allowed him to plead guilty to disturbing the peace.

Jack's ex-girlfriend, 23, says he yanked her out of his car by her hair as the two were driving in downtown Denver on May 31. In the process, he ripped out her hair extensions and some of her real hair, she claims.
