Snoop Dogg is the latest celebrity to court controversy with his negative reaction to the unveiling of Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover earlier this week.

The hip hop artist posted a Meme of fellow rapper Akon which highlighted his charitable work in Africa but also labelled Jenner a 'science project.'

'Shout out to Akon! He is about to supply 600 million africans with solar power. Im really upset that this isn't major news but that science project bruce jenner is #Society,' posted Snoop on Instagram.

Snoop's diss of Jenner came in a Meme which also praised rapper Akon for his charitable work in Africa

His dismissive comment about Jenner sparked outrage on social media with some calling them 'sad and disappointing.'

'How long were you in the news for a stupid f***ing name change?' one person commented in reference to the artist briefly changing his stage name to Snoop Lion.

'But when someone else changes up their identity suddenly its not worth it. Not buying another song of yours EVER.'

'This is 2015. Do you not believe in the pursuit of happiness?' wrote another. 'Your comments are just sad and disappointing.'

'Real bummed that @SnoopDogg is shading @Caitlyn_Jenner on IG,' another person tweeted. 'Thought him of all people would be open minded and accepting.'

Music producer Timbaland reposted this Coming To America-inspired Meme, but has denied that he mean't Caitlyn any harm

Snoop also received a lot of comments agreeing with his opinion and his post has so far received over 141,000 likes and more than 6,000 comments

The rapper isn't the first person to be blasted for his insensitive reaction to Caitlyn Jenner.

Superstar music producer Timbaland posted a Meme on Facebook on Monday which adapted a famous line from the Eddie Murphy movie Coming To America.

'His momma named him Bruce. Imma name him Bruce,' it read.

Much as with Snoop's post it provoked a range of opinions from people, some of whom accused Timbaland of being insensitive.

'His opinions are as dated as his music and should stay in the early 90s when he used to be popular,' wrote one person. The re-post on Timbaland's Facebook page has received over 8,000 likes and has attracted more than 1,300 comments.

Others celebrities who have spoken out to make negative remarks about Jenner include Connor Cruise, right and Drake Bell, left

Timbaland has since spoken out to say that he maintains that the Meme – which he didn't create – was funny and he doesn't have anything again Jenner.

'This was a repost I thought was funny I'm not making fun of him I support him but stop it we can all laugh sometime dammmmm it's just a dam repost someone sent to me !!!!!' he added to the comments section.

Others who have spoken out to make negative remarks about Jenner include Connor Cruise and Drake Bell.

Tom Cruise's son Connor tweeted - and then quickly deleted - a rant against the star receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY Awards.

'Really?? Winning the AA award for courage?? Ashton is gonna come out and yell PUNK'D,' Connor tweeted on Wednesday.

'Don't get me wrong. Do what you feel like doing and don't let anyone stop you. But everyone is taking this way too seriously.

It seems that when the DJ received backlash from other Twitter users, he deleted his comments.

After Caitlyn (who was born Bruce) revealed her true self on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine on Monday, countless stars spoke out in support of the 65-year-old Olympic gold medallist.

Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, 28, came under fire when he tweeted after seeing the 'Call Me Caitlyn' cover: 'Sorry... still calling you Bruce.'

Caitlyn will be starring in a new eight-part documentary series on E!, which will be called I Am Cait and premieres on July 26.
