Colin Farrell looks particularly trim as he scoops Maui Film Festival Award... after gaining 40 pounds for The Lobster role

He gained 40 pounds in eight weeks, but Colin Farrell appears to be back on top form.

The actor looked particularly trim when he attended the Maui Film Festival on Thursday after recently revealing he 'gasped' at his formerly-fat self in character for a recent film.

Colin, 39, who first showed off his slender transformation at the Cannes Film Festival last month, was in Hawaii to pick up the Navigator Rainmaker Award for excellence.

His commitment to film making was certainly clear after he admitted to 'gasping' at pictures of himself in character as David in 2015's The Lobster.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last month, Colin confessed: 'I would put [ice cream] in the microwave to melt and drink it. 

'Two cheeseburgers, fries and Coca-Colas, and two slices of chocolate cake at 10 a.m. is not that fun -- and I love cheeseburgers.

Explaining his reaction to the method acting experience, Farrell said: 'It makes you aware of how you've identified being a certain way. I gasped [when I saw myself shirtless on screen]. I'd forgotten what it looked like.'

He'd apparently bounced back to his slender self in not much time at all and showed off his trim figure in a waistcoat this week. 

Colin certainly got into the spirit of the Hawaiian festival when he teamed a pair of flip-flops with his suit and tropical lei.

Lupita Nyong'o was the last winner to scoop the silver plaque, which honours 'a film artist for carving a path of distinction through the turbulent waters of the entertainment industry without sacrificing their fundamental commitment to excellence.'

Later in the evening Laura Dern was honoured for her 'eclectic film choices and charismatic performances' with stars including Girls' Adam Driver also in attendance at the event.

Accepting the award for True Detective, Colin admitted that his previous method acting parts have seen him delve 'deep into my not-so-distant past.'

Calling his TV character Ray Velcoro 'a bit of burnout, really,' he quipped to Variety: 'He's somebody who like many of us in life is wrestling with events that took place in his past.

'He is trying to move forward from them, but trapped in this continual cycle of behaviour he can't get out of. I think fundamentally he's a good man that made some very bad choices.'

Colin cleaned up his act in 2003 after gaining a reputation for hard-partying and decided to receive treatment for his drug and alcohol abuse. 

Going on to discuss his own 'past' he added: 'I can't remember so much (of that). I'm good, man. I was at the party long enough. I was the party long enough. For me…. I'm very glad to be alive.'
