It's war! One Direction and ex-bandmate Zayn Malik go head-to-head at this year's Teen Choice Awards ...and 1D fans are far from happy

It's every Directioner's worst nightmare.

At this year's Teen Choice Awards, die-hard fans of One Direction have been asked to do the unthinkable... choose between the band and ex-member Zayn Malik.

Both One Direction and Zayn - who quit the hugely successful band in March this year - have been nominated for Fashion Choice Male Hottie, and some fans have already vented their frustration on Twitter.

'You have got to be kidding me! My heart aches,' one upset fan wrote, while another tweeted: 'Just when you thought the 1D fandom drama is calming down. Teen Choice awards has just started world war three.'

There is no word yet on whether the band or Zayn will be making an appearance at the event, which is set to take play on August 16 in Los Angeles.

One Direction have received three nominations in total, including Choice Music Group: Male and for their song Steal My Girl.

Elsewhere, the nominations gave nods to some of this year's biggest box office bombs including Jupiter Ascending and Hot Pursuit.

Both Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis are nominated in the acting categories for their roles in the overblown sci-fi epic, directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski.

While Reese Witherspoon gets a nod in the comedic actress category for Hot Pursuit, which was torn apart by critics earlier this year.
